When Knox and Jayden appeared, I was on the beach helping tourists take photos.
The visitors liked my style and even gave me tips.
I accepted gladly, but when they bent down to give me the customary cheek kisses...
Knox rushed forward and pulled me away.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" he demanded.
The tourists moved to push him away, but I stopped them, not wanting to involve them in this mess.
After moving to a quiet spot, I looked up at him.
Knox stared at me intently, as if he couldn't get enough of the sight, but I found it strange and... revolting.
I didn't ask how they found me.
After all, if they wanted to find me, they had their ways.
"Are you here to settle scores?" I asked.
Knox faltered, his voice breaking with grief.
"That was my child too."
I softly countered: "Did you really care about the baby?"
Knox vehemently objected: "How can you think I didn't care?"
Looking at his bloodshot eyes, I actually laughed.
Laughed at his fake emotions.
Laughed at his pretend sincerity.
"You released that video while I was pregnant. You let the whole world see my humiliation. Is that what you call caring?"
As I finished speaking, Knox's face instantly turned paper-white.
His eyes filled with panic, yet he couldn't utter a single word in his defense.
Even Jayden, normally so calculating, stood frozen, unable to look at me.
After a long while, Knox finally spoke with difficulty: "Piper, we were wrong. Let us make it up to you."
The waves rolled endlessly in the distance as I slowly shook my head.
"Your absence is the greatest compensation you can offer me."
Knox's face was taut with tension.
In this suffocating silence, I spoke again:
"I want a divorce. Let's finalize it when we get back to Boston."
Even on the flight back, Knox never said what I had hoped to hear.
But it didn't matter. No one could stop my decision.
News of my return spread quickly. Somehow Mila found out that very day.
While Knox and Jayden were preparing dinner for me, she barged in.
To my surprise, she had brought my adoptive parents—those monsters.
Knox's expression immediately changed. He positioned himself in front of me.
"Get the hell out!" he ordered coldly.
My adoptive mother didn't dare confront him directly, but fixed her bitter, mean eyes on me.
Her tone dripped with mockery: "Well, well, look who's high and mighty now. From chicken to phoenix, daring to bully my daughter. Do you have a death wish?"
My adoptive father, submissive his entire life, somehow found the courage to stand tall before me.
He still thought I was that little girl who couldn't fight back or answer back.
Seeing me staring at him, he spat on the ground: "What are you looking at? You want me to beat you again?"
I smiled. Of course I believed him.
Brooms for sweeping, pitchforks from the barn, wooden paddles from the kitchen... anything they could grab, they'd used to beat me with at some point.
To this couple, I was never a human being.
Even sick animals received medicine, but when I had a fever of nearly 104 degrees, they made me endure it without treatment.
If I weren't resilient, how could I have survived until today?
