My adoptive mother glared at me, pointing her finger in my face:
"Scared now, aren't you, you little bitch? Apologize to our Mila immediately! Then get out of this house! Remember, the only daughter of the Calloway family is her. You're just some country trash…"
"Enough!" Knox had reached his breaking point. He pushed them toward the door.
"You bloodsucking parasites! Come here again and I'll feed you to the dogs!"
Jayden released his Dobermans, which shot out like bullets.
My adoptive parents' faces contorted with terror as they turned and ran.
Mila's smug expression instantly froze.
She stomped her foot in fury: "Call the dogs off! Now!"
"You're humiliating me in front of her? Do you want me dead or something?"
She had no genuine feelings for my adoptive parents—she'd only brought them to torment me.
But she was clearly dissatisfied with the outcome.
Instead, Knox and Jayden merely watched her coldly as she became increasingly desperate.
A moment later, my adoptive mother screamed in agony as the dogs caught her leg and shook it violently.
My adoptive father, the coward, had already abandoned his wife and fled.
Mila had promised them fifty thousand dollars if they succeeded, but clearly, his life mattered more.
Jayden restrained the dogs and ordered medical staff to bandage my adoptive mother's wounds.
Though pale with pain, as she was carried past me on a stretcher, she still glared at me venomously.
She muttered viciously: "Ungrateful bitch, enjoying seeing your mother hurt, are you? Just wait till I recover—I'll teach you a lesson! Little bastard, laughing at your own mother, I'll… AAGH!"
Before she could finish, I slapped her hard across the face.
Instant silence fell over the room.
My adoptive mother stared at me in disbelief.
"You... you little… AAGH!"
Before she could complete her insult, another slap landed.
Her face instantly reddened, her bravado visibly deflating.
Seeing me raise my hand again, she immediately begged:
"Stop, please stop..."
I smiled, slowly lowering my trembling hand. From this moment on, no one would ever bully me again.
Mila charged forward, determined to avenge those two slaps.
But before she could touch me, Knox and Jayden instinctively rushed to push her away.
Mila crashed to the floor.
She looked up dazedly, her face streaked with tears.
But Knox and Jayden only had eyes for me, filled with concern.
"Are you okay, Piper?"
I shook my head and stepped away from them.
Mila completely broke down.
She could endure injury and suffering.
But seeing the men she loved most in the world care only about me was worse than death.
She struggled to her feet, stared at me for several seconds, then turned and walked away, utterly dejected.
Today was supposed to be the welcome dinner Knox and Jayden had prepared for me.
But everything was ruined. They were heartbroken and filled with remorse.
I had no particular reaction, simply sitting down to eat my meal.
They didn't dare say anything, silently keeping me company.
But the next morning, I pulled out the divorce papers from my bag.
"Let's go. The sooner we divorce, the sooner we'll both be free."
Knox's precariously balanced hopes crashed down. After a long silence, he asked painfully:
"Is divorce really the only option?"
I countered: "Why else would I come back? To endure Mila and her parents' abuse?"
Jayden, seeing Knox's state, looked pained.
He turned to persuade me: "Piper, Knox really…"
But before he could finish, I interrupted: "Jayden, I'd appreciate it if you stayed out of our business."
Jayden froze, his expression gradually darkening.
He realized that while I once valued his opinion highly, now he could feel my detachment.
At my insistence, Knox reluctantly followed me to the Suffolk County Courthouse in downtown Boston.
When it came time to sign his name, he finally broke down in tears:
"Piper, please don't delete my contact information. Give me one more chance. I promise I'll treat you well in the future."
I didn't respond, nor did I acknowledge Jayden's outstretched hand offering to carry my luggage.
I simply took my divorce certificate with satisfaction and got into the taxi I'd arranged.
My wish fulfilled, it was time to live my own life.
