Just as I'd landed an offer from a company way better than Thorne Corp, my apartment doorbell started ringing.
It was Callan.
He looked like a completely different person, after just two weeks, .
His eyes were bloodshot, exhausted, totally frantic.
The second he saw me open the door, he lunged forward:
"Rowan! Thank god you'll finally see me!"
I stood there blocking the doorway, staring at him with zero expression.
Callan frantically opened this velvet box he was clutching—
A massive diamond ring practically blinded me.
He dropped to one knee, words tumbling out:
"Rowan, look! The ring! I got it! Let's get married! We can go to city hall right now!"
"I was such an asshole before! Please forgive me! Just come back and I'll give you anything you want!"
When my face didn't change at all, he got even more desperate:
"That idiot Sable—I got rid of her! All those people calling you names? I'm gonna destroy every single one of them!"
"I'll never let anyone hurt you again! Rowan, I can't do this without you..."
He reached out to grab my arm. I stepped back.
I looked at him—really looked at him—and felt something that might have been pity.
That's when it hit me. To him, I was just some tool he could use to clean up his messes.
Grovel when he needed me, kick me aside when he didn't.
"Callan, do you still not get it?"
My voice was eerily calm, completely emotionless.
A spark of hope flickered in Callan's eyes as he stared at me desperately.
"I didn't leave because of Sable. I didn't leave because we never got married."
I spoke slowly, making sure every word landed:
"I left because I finally realized that you, Callan Thorne, don't deserve eight years of my love. And you sure as hell don't deserve my future."
I stepped back and slammed the door in his face.
Callan slumped against the cold wall, the diamond ring clattering to the floor.
"Don't deserve her? She actually said I don't deserve her?"
He punched the door, his knuckles immediately splitting and bleeding.
"No... this can't happen... Rowan, you can't do this to me!"
His fists kept pounding the door, making the whole frame shake.
"Rowan! Open up! Just listen to me!"
"Rowan... please, if this deal falls through, my dad's gonna kill me!"
"How can you be this heartless! Eight years! Are you really gonna throw away eight years?!"
On the other side of that wall, I took a deep breath and dialed HR:
"Hi, this is Rowan Sylver. I'm calling to accept your offer."
The voice on the other end was thrilled:
"That's fantastic, Ms. Sylver! Welcome aboard! Can you come in Monday to handle the paperwork?"
"Absolutely. See you Monday."
