"Get out."
With him holding the door open, Sophia reluctantly gathered her coat and exited the car.
Ethan stared at her. "Where do you live?"
Sophia stood frozen, not responding.
Ethan repeated more firmly: "I asked where you live. I'll take you home."
Sophia finally understood his intention. As she opened her mouth, a hint of caution made her name a nearby neighborhood instead of her actual address.
Sophia got into the passenger seat, and while fastening her seatbelt, couldn't resist asking: "So you're moonlighting as a driver now?"
The car had barely started moving when Ethan shot her a look as sharp as an arrow.
Sophia immediately shut up, not saying another word.
Throughout the two-hour drive, Sophia didn't utter a single sentence.
When Ethan pulled over, Sophia immediately unfastened her seatbelt. She was about to thank him when she noticed Ethan showed no sign of getting out.
She suddenly felt uncertain about what Ethan intended. After Ethan remained silent for a while, Sophia could only speak up awkwardly.
"Do you... need something else?"
"Have you been in Chicago all these years?"
Perhaps it was Ethan's cold expression and tone, but when he asked this question, Sophia found it difficult to convince herself that Ethan genuinely cared about her or was curious about her recent life.
Sophia forced a smile: "I don't think we're in a position to share these things anymore."
She didn't care about Ethan, wasn't curious about how he'd been doing.
So she didn't want Ethan to care about her either.
Their meeting after three years shouldn't be this calm or seemingly warm.
Ethan caught her sarcasm and let out a small scoff: "So you're aware of your guilt. That's why you haven't dared to come back all these years."
Hearing this, Sophia immediately pushed open the car door and got out.
After three years, Ethan increasingly made her want to avoid conversation with him.
The nighttime wind was even colder, and before she could steady herself, her body was thoroughly chilled.
Ethan got out from the driver's side and tossed her the keys.
"Next time you lie, prepare a better story first."
Sophia didn't understand what he meant until she saw him turn and walk into the neighborhood.
The entrance security recognized him as a resident, allowing him in without any hindrance.
Sophia felt her scalp tingle.
The neighborhood she'd randomly named was actually Ethan's home?
She glanced at Ethan's retreating figure, locked the car, wrapped her coat tightly around herself, and walked in the opposite direction.
Though the alcohol had worn off considerably and the driving distance wasn't far, she still didn't want to risk it.
By the time she arrived home, her entire body was stiff with cold.
The apartment was lit only by wall lamps, sparing her from complete darkness.
Sophia first washed up, then went to check on her daughter's room. Confirming the little girl was sound asleep, she quietly returned to the master bedroom and lay down.
She recalled how in the elevator, Ethan's colleague had mentioned they were here for the company's annual meeting.
During her years away from Manhattan, she had deliberately avoided any news about Ethan.
Now it seemed he was doing well.
She had originally thought that as long as she stayed in Chicago and didn't think about the past or return to Manhattan, she and Ethan would never have reason to meet again.
After all, their last phone call before she withdrew her case had been anything but peaceful.
From their brief encounter today, with barbs thrown right from the start, she could see that Ethan still harbored resentment toward her.
But thinking about it again, Sophia wondered why Ethan had any right to resent her.
When she withdrew her case, she had paid all fees.
What right did he have to act superior now?
The more Sophia thought, the more rational she felt. She decided not to worry about encountering Ethan again, put down her phone, and fell asleep.
