Sophia turned to see Ethan's face inches from hers.
She quickly pushed him away, but due to the crowd, couldn't immediately leave.
The two couldn't distance themselves at all. Sophia turned her head away, refusing to look at him.
Ethan glanced at the sandwich in her hand: "Let me take you to lunch."
Sensing Sophia wouldn't agree, he added: "Using your money."
Sophia turned to glare at him, acknowledging that he knew he'd been scamming her money that morning.
How shameful—a respected lawyer knowingly breaking the law.
"Doesn't Mr. Big Shot Lawyer need to rush back to the firm with those documents? I wouldn't dare waste your precious time."
The crowd suddenly dispersed, and as soon as Sophia finished speaking, she wasted no time diving back into the flow of people.
By the time she got into the elevator, she realized her coffee had spilled considerably.
Ethan's abnormal behavior made her heart race uncontrollably.
She could reject Ethan, but her racing heart didn't lie.
She couldn't figure out what Ethan was trying to do—whether it was revenge or just post-reunion courtesy—she couldn't find a reasonable explanation.
Her phone screen suddenly lit up without warning, displaying a baby photo of Mia. Sophia felt like she'd been struck.
She remembered that call to Ethan, telling him the baby might be his.
All she'd received in response was Victoria's mocking laughter and his sarcasm.
The memories were vivid, the pain fresh as if it were new.
Back in her office, she collapsed into her sofa chair with a long sigh.
She quickly warned herself: "Sophia Reed, wake up. He's married now."
For the entire afternoon, Sophia was distracted, noticeably deflated, only smiling when Liam deliberately tried to cheer her up.
"If you really can't accept it, we can switch lawyers."
Sophia spoke flatly: "It's not because of that."
"You're upset about something else?"
Sophia sighed: "I ran into Ethan."
Liam's expressions cycled through various changes, unsure if Sophia was being serious or joking.
"Three times in two days," Sophia held up her fingers, then added, "Actually, more like twenty-four hours."
Liam looked incredulous: "That's just too..."
He didn't know which adjective to use.
They'd never bumped into him before, so why, in these past couple of days, did it feel like they were cursed?
Sophia tested the waters: "Maybe after this lawsuit is over, we should relocate again?"
Three years ago, in a moment of impulse, she had decided to leave Manhattan.
Liam, without hesitation, had accompanied her to Chicago.
Though not starting completely from scratch, the beginning had been tough—they weren't short on money, but they hadn't made much either.
Things only started improving in the second year.
But no one had anticipated the incident six months ago.
Liam supported Sophia unconditionally, even knowing she was probably just thinking out loud.
He expressed his stance: "We can establish ourselves anywhere. From the edge of the world to the depths of the ocean, I'm with you."
Sophia genuinely wanted to escape, but with Liam being so supportive, she felt she was being unreasonable.
"Just kidding."
Sophia checked the time and got up from the sofa: "I'm heading out first."
Liam called after her: "Marcus and I will visit Mia tonight."
"Then have dinner at my place. I'll tell Ms. Klein to prepare."
Sophia had already taken out her phone to call the housekeeper.
Liam shouted: "We can pick up groceries if needed!"
Sophia heard him but didn't respond, walking away.
That evening, after picking up Mia, she told her: "Uncle Liam and Uncle Marcus are coming to see you tonight."
Sophia watched Mia clap her hands in her car seat. Though she didn't speak, her laughter filled the entire car.
Mia had grown up without a father, with Liam essentially filling the 'father' role.
Although Mia didn't call him dad, all her understanding of what a 'father' should be came from Liam.
Since starting kindergarten, she would get especially excited at the mention of Liam and Marcus visiting.
This time was no exception. When they reached the parking garage, Sophia lifted her from the car seat. As soon as Mia's feet touched the ground, she ran towards the elevator on her little legs.
Sophia closed the car door, warning her: "Be careful not to fall."
Mia replied in her childish voice: "Mia won't fall."
With the dim garage lighting, fearing she might trip, Sophia quickly caught up with her, picked her up, and entered the elevator.
In the elevator, Sophia stared at Mia, suddenly noticing something flashing at her sleeve.
Sophia pulled up Mia's sleeve to see a bracelet she'd never seen before.
