"Mia, who gave you this bracelet?"
She pointed at the flower-shaped mother-of-pearl charm, her expression serious.
Mia also pointed at the flower with her small hand. "Jamie gave it to me."
"Who's Jamie? Your friend?"
Mia nodded seriously: "New friend."
Children don't understand much, but Sophia couldn't just let it go.
As soon as they got home, she handed Mia to Liam and Marcus, immediately calling the kindergarten teacher.
"Yes, there is a new student called Jamie who just joined the school. The two children get along well. Regarding the bracelet, I haven't been contacted by the parents yet, but I'll ask and get back to you later."
"Thank you."
Sophia hung up and left her room to join Mia.
During dinner, Sophia received a message from the teacher: [Ms. Reed, the bracelet does belong to Jamie. Please bring it back to school tomorrow.]
"What's got you so distracted?"
Liam couldn't help but comment.
Sophia put down her phone, her brow furrowed with worry: "Mia brought someone else's bracelet home. I'm afraid she might have taken it without permission."
Liam quickly refuted: "You know your own daughter better than that. Would a child you raised do something like that?"
Sophia was speechless.
Liam scolded her: "How can you not trust Mia? What kind of mother are you?"
"No, I didn't mean…"
"Even if—and that's a big if—Mia did take someone else's thing, there must be a reason. You're her mother; how can you not be on her side?"
After being lectured for a while, Sophia finally had enough and cut him off: "That's enough."
Marcus stayed out of the conversation, taking on the important task of feeding Mia.
Being scolded by Liam, Sophia grew defensive: "Keep criticizing me like this, and one day Mia won't be close to me anymore. Then you'll never see her again."
"Look at you! Think you're so special because you have a kid!"
Liam wasn't genuinely angry, and after Sophia bantered with him a bit, they both moved on.
After dinner, Liam and Marcus played with Mia for a while before reluctantly leaving.
Sophia took Mia for a bath, still concerned, and asked: "Mia, can you tell Mommy how you and Jamie play at school?"
"Jamie came, scared, likes me."
Sophia understood she was saying Jamie was new to kindergarten, afraid to interact with other children, but got along with her.
Mia couldn't lie, and Sophia had only been worried that Mia might not understand the difference between giving, taking, and stealing.
But with Mia's explanation, she wasn't as concerned anymore.
"That's my good girl. Playing with friends at school makes everyone happy, right?"
Mia nodded, her grape-like eyes sparkling like stars.
Sophia's day-long tension seemed to ease.
Countless times, she believed Mia was an angel sent by heaven.
The next morning, Sophia took Mia to kindergarten.
Jamie hadn't arrived yet, so Sophia gave the bracelet to the teacher, preparing to leave.
She had only walked a few steps when the teacher suddenly said: "Here's Jamie now. That's her."
Sophia looked in the direction the teacher pointed and saw a little girl with curly hair just like Mia's.
She stared at Jamie for quite a while, and as Jamie approached, Sophia greeted her first.
"Hi, Jamie." Sophia waved friendly, looking up to speak to Jamie's parent.
"I'm really sorry about yesterday..."
Before she could finish, she saw another face that had been appearing frequently these past days.
