His eyes were calm to the point of coldness, yet somehow carried a hint of mockery.
Sophia hesitated for two seconds, unable to say his name.
"Jamie told me yesterday she made a new friend, so she gave her the bracelet."
Ethan's voice crept into her mind like a ghost, and Sophia felt her head buzzing.
"I gave the bracelet to the teacher. You can get it from her."
She looked down, meeting the gaze of Jamie looking up at her—beautiful, innocent eyes, filled with pure sincerity—yet at this moment, they somehow made her feel cold.
She watched as Jamie's small hand tightly held the larger hand, and felt a wave of dizziness.
"My daughter doesn't know how valuable the gift is. I apologize on her behalf."
Ethan suddenly said: "So your daughter is already in kindergarten."
His tone wasn't particularly heavy or light, but to Sophia's ears, it was especially grating.
What was wrong with her daughter being in kindergarten?
Now he was also dropping off his daughter at school.
Sophia didn't respond.
After Ethan handed Jamie to the teacher, who tied yesterday's bracelet back around Jamie's wrist, Sophia glanced once and turned to walk away.
At the kindergarten gate, Sophia started her car and had driven barely five meters when another car suddenly cut in front of her.
She quickly turned the steering wheel, avoiding a collision.
The car had deliberately cut her off, forcing its way in front.
The front car lowered its window, and Sophia saw Ethan's profile.
Knowing he did it on purpose, Sophia felt fury burning inside her, almost tempted to hit the gas and ram him.
But considering they were near a kindergarten, she could only suppress her outrageous thoughts.
Back in her office, Sophia rarely vented her anger:
"You should have seen his smug face when he cut me off. What's his problem? His daughter and my daughter are in the same class!"
"He can make comments like that, but I'm just supposed to take it?"
Her uncharacteristic outburst made Liam burst out laughing, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably until Sophia's death glare shut him up.
"You two broke up how many years ago? If you hadn't hired him as your lawyer, you'd have been separated for six or seven years."
"After all this time, you still can't let each other go. What kind of deep grudge is this?"
From his perspective, a breakup wasn't that big a deal.
Especially since the misunderstanding from back then—he had personally cleared things up with Ethan.
Why these two were still in this state, he truly couldn't understand.
Sophia had a belly full of grievances, listing Ethan's "crimes" one by one:
"Am I the one who can't let go? I was living perfectly fine in Chicago. Why did he suddenly come to Chicago? He lives in the neighborhood next to mine and even sends his child to Mia's kindergarten. Clearly, he's the one haunting me, okay?"
First come, first served—that should constrain his actions.
"You never used to get angry over small things like this. Why are you so upset this time?"
Liam's sudden question made Sophia freeze.
Yes, why was she so angry?
She had always known Ethan was married. Marriage and children were perfectly normal.
Why was she being so emotional?
Was it because she couldn't accept Ethan reappearing in her life?
Or was it because she couldn't accept that Ethan had a perfect life yet still inexplicably appeared before her?
He'd offered to drive her home, repeatedly said he wanted to treat her to meals.
He approached her so proactively, although with a cold demeanor, but each time, he acted as if he were unbound by any constraints.
Yet clearly, he was married and had an adorable daughter.
Remembering Jamie from that morning, Sophia's chest felt lighter.
Like Mia, she had a head of adorable curly hair, with big, dark eyes.
Ethan's daughter was truly lovely.
In fact, she thought Jamie and Mia looked somewhat similar.
Suddenly realizing something, Sophia snapped back to reality.
"Anyway! After Mia finishes this semester, I'm switching her school."
Liam complained from the side: "Mia finally has some friends, and you want to transfer her? Don't you know frequent environmental changes can cause psychological issues for kids?"
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
Just thinking about future parent-child activities where she might encounter Ethan made Sophia shudder.
"It's not hard. I'll take Mia to school from now on, so you won't run into him."
"What about parent-child activities?"
"I'll go."
Sophia gave him a sidelong glance.
Liam looked guilty: "What? In Mia's heart, I'm practically her father. Why can't I go?"
"Don't believe me? Ask Mia if she wants me as her dad."
Sophia gritted her teeth: "You really don't care what I think, do you?"
Whether he could be Mia's father depended first on her agreement.
Before Liam could speak, she warned him: "Don't you dare ask her!"
Liam could only shrug helplessly and leave.
