As this thought crossed her mind, Sophia startled herself.
Ethan so despised people unfaithful to relationships—how could he do such a thing?
But she kept staring at Jamie and the woman, and Jamie was definitely calling her "Mommy."
If Ethan hadn't cheated, had he divorced Victoria and married this woman?
Byron had mentioned Ethan was staying in Chicago for family reasons.
Was it because the woman he ultimately built a family with, who gave him a child, was in Chicago?
The cold wind cut like a knife across her face. Sophia suddenly realized her eyes were welling up.
She turned away, hastily explaining: "This wind is so strong, it's making my eyes tear up."
She and Ethan should have had no further entanglements, should never have met again.
Yet fate seemed determined to toy with her.
Mrs. Reed asked: "Who's that?"
"Mia's classmate," Sophia paused before adding, "Ethan James's daughter."
Mrs. Reed was taken aback, murmuring: "Ethan's child is already so big."
Mr. Reed couldn't help but look more closely too.
Sophia's relationship with Ethan wasn't just known to her parents—they had fully supported it.
They had been told marriage was imminent and were preparing to return to the U.S. when Sophia called, saying it was over, they had broken up.
No matter how they pressed, Sophia never revealed the reason for the breakup.
Until two years later, when she announced she was marrying again.
Now, six years had passed, and they hadn't expected to hear Ethan's name again.
And his daughter was Mia's classmate.
But even now, her parents didn't know why they had broken up.
Mrs. Reed tested Sophia's attitude: "When did Ethan come to Chicago?"
Sophia immediately shook her head: "I don't know."
Seeing Sophia's reluctance, her parents exchanged a glance and tactfully dropped the subject, declaring they wanted to go home.
Sophia hugged Mia, explaining: "Jamie is also out playing with her mommy. Next time at school, you can say hello to her, okay?"
Mia was very understanding, nodding obediently and resting on Sophia's shoulder without any fuss.
On the way home, Sophia was quiet, and her mood remained low after arriving.
Her parents exchanged looks, telling Mia to play in the toy room by herself for a while.
Sophia was about to follow Mia but was stopped by Mrs. Reed.
"After all this time, are you willing to tell us why you and Ethan broke up?"
Sophia was startled: "I've said it countless times—we were incompatible. Why are you still asking after all these years?"
"If you'd truly moved on, we wouldn't care. But ask yourself, have you moved on?"
With her father's words, Sophia's already poor mood exploded.
"Why wouldn't I move on? Back then, he didn't give me an ounce of trust or a chance to explain. Does it still matter why we broke up?"
It mattered.
It mattered tremendously.
Sophia could emphasize a thousand times that it didn't matter, but a voice inside would always insist otherwise.
Ethan's trust in her had been so fragile that it made their five years together seem laughable.
Mrs. Reed frowned: "What exactly did you do back then?"
Sophia didn't want to defend herself: "I did everything wrong. Happy now?"
Without waiting for her parents' reaction, she turned and walked toward the toy room.
Explaining herself would only make her past seem more foolish.
She and Ethan now had separate lives. She just wanted to take good care of Mia.
Past people and events had no place in her current life.
Discovering Sophia had a lawsuit after the holiday, her parents offered to stay longer in Chicago.
Knowing they missed Mia, Sophia didn't refuse.
Mia remained at her previous kindergarten. Sophia decided to look for a new school once she was less busy.
The day of the trial, Byron turned the tide, securing a victory for Sophia.
Leaving the courtroom, Sophia felt considerably lighter.
The runaway model, now liable for damages, no longer dared to be arrogant when seeing her.
Sophia had just thanked Byron when she noticed her phone vibrating continuously in her bag.
Taking it out, she saw over a dozen missed calls.
Messages kept popping up, and she soon saw one from her mother:
[Are you finished? We're all at the hospital. Mia is already being examined.]
