Sophia's heart clenched violently. Before she could check the previous messages, without even saying goodbye to Byron, she was already running outside.
Not wanting to waste time, Sophia didn't even check her phone again in the car. She got in, floored the accelerator, and raced to the hospital.
After reporting at the information desk, she finally found the operating room.
Mr. and Mrs. Reed, even Ethan, Jamie, Jamie's mother, and the kindergarten principal were all there.
Seeing this scene, Sophia's legs weakened. Leaning on her mother's arm to stand, her voice distorted with extreme tension.
"What happened to Mia? What's wrong with her?"
The principal stepped forward to explain: "Mia fell from a slide during outdoor activities and hit her head."
Sophia looked at him in disbelief: "Aren't teachers supposed to supervise outdoor activities? How did she fall?"
"The teacher didn't see what happened."
"What about surveillance cameras?"
After a moment of silence from the principal, Sophia lunged forward and grabbed his collar. "What are you being paid for? Such small children during outdoor activities, and neither teachers nor cameras saw anything!"
Sophia was beyond agitated. The principal didn't dare speak further. Mr. and Mrs. Reed pulled her back, and Ethan also approached.
"There were only Mia and Jamie on the slide at the time. Jamie was frightened afterward and said she pushed Mia."
Sophia looked at him as he continued: "But we can't fully trust what children say."
"I'm staying here with her to wait for Mia to come out, so we can ask her directly. Is that okay?"
Sophia was speechless, while Ethan's brow remained furrowed: "I'm sorry."
Sophia looked past him to see Jamie, tear-streaked, holding her mother's hand and trembling against the wall.
Jamie's mother also looked at her with regret.
Sophia couldn't bear to watch and turned away in frustration.
She didn't want to hear Ethan speak and also knew she shouldn't blame a child.
But her child was lying in the operating room.
She wasn't a saint and didn't want to see this family at all right now.
Ten minutes later, the operating room door suddenly opened, and Sophia rushed over.
"Doctor! How is my daughter?"
The doctor just told her to stay calm before looking at those behind her.
"Are you the child's family?"
Mr. and Mrs. Reed nodded, and the doctor turned to the others present: "Who has Type O blood? The child needs a transfusion. The blood bank just sent out a batch and hasn't been restocked. Can any of you donate blood for the child?"
Sophia's heart sank heavily as she looked toward Ethan.
Sure enough, the next second he immediately stepped forward: "I am. I can…"
Sophia rushed over and grabbed him: "No, you can't!"
Ethan's wife and daughter were watching her from the side, and Sophia felt as if a thousand knives were piercing her heart.
Why? Why did it have to be like this?
Ethan also looked at her, not understanding why she would stop him at such a critical moment.
But Sophia couldn't say anything. She only knew she had to prevent Ethan from donating.
Mrs. Reed, seeing her behavior and assuming she was holding onto past grudges, grew frantic.
"He can save Mia! Can't you put aside your past grievances?"
Mrs. Reed gripped her hand tightly, as if Mia would be beyond saving if she didn't let go.
Tears streamed down Sophia's face. Her daughter's condition was uncertain, and now she needed a blood transfusion to save her.
With every nerve that fired, her head throbbed harder.
All the voices crashed down on her, making her dizzy.
A sharp ringing filled her ears as Sophia broke down, covering her face and screaming: "Direct relatives can't donate blood!"
