The hallway instantly fell silent. Sophia's shouted words landed like bombs on everyone's hearts, causing an intense shudder.
Everyone who had been arguing moments ago now stared at her in unison.
One second, two seconds… complete silence.
Sophia stood frozen, while Ethan in front of her was equally stunned.
"You..."
Even the doctor's urgency was mixed with astonishment. The principal was the first to compose himself, stepping forward: "I have Type O blood."
"Come with me."
The doctor took the principal away, and the corridor returned to silence.
Mr. and Mrs. Reed hadn't yet recovered, while Jamie and her mother also watched from the wall.
They all seemed uncertain how to react.
"Come with me." Ethan was the first to regain his senses, pulling Sophia aside.
Sophia followed in a daze, too numb to react.
"What did you mean by what you just said?"
Sophia looked up at him. He still wore that suspicious expression.
From past to present, Ethan's trust in her had always been pathetically scarce.
Even when she was forced to reveal such a fact, trampling her dignity underfoot, he still questioned her words first.
Compared to her parents' and Jamie's mother's gazes, Ethan's scrutiny was what truly pierced her heart.
"You think I'm making up stories just to prevent you from saving my daughter?"
Sophia's voice trembled as she spoke.
"That's not what I meant." Ethan pressed his lips together. "I just want to confirm. Is Mia..."
"Mia is your daughter. Satisfied?"
Sophia clenched her fists, her breathing unsteady.
"But you…"
Sophia couldn't bear to hear any more of Ethan's questioning and cut him off.
"My daughter is in there fighting for her life. I don't have the heart to play your identification games right now. If you have any decency left, take them and leave."
Whether Jamie had pushed Mia or not, true or false, she couldn't face them now.
Sophia was on the edge of collapse, her facade of rationality making her look like she might shatter at any moment.
Ethan couldn't bear to see it and agreed: "I'll have them go home first. I'll stay here with you."
"You…"
Sophia was about to object, but he had already turned toward the waiting area.
Sophia followed a few steps behind, watching him speak briefly to Jamie's mother, who quickly left with Jamie.
She walked back to her parents, her steps unsteady. As she slumped into a seat, Mrs. Reed approached again.
"You just now…"
Sophia's eyes were painfully swollen, her voice weak: "Mom, I'm exhausted right now. Can we talk about this later?"
Mrs. Reed had no choice but to close her mouth.
The light above the operating room remained on. On opposite benches, Sophia and Ethan sat in silence, facing each other.
Inside was their daughter.
Yet he didn't believe it.
Sophia was even beginning to fear: if Mia had truly been pushed by Jamie, what would Ethan do?
Would he sacrifice her daughter for his own?
But now he knew Mia was his daughter too.
How would he choose?
Sophia leaned against the wall, tears flowing unstoppably.
Mia was her life—absolutely nothing could happen to her.
Two more hours passed before the operating room light finally went out.
Sophia rose urgently, her vision momentarily blacked out. Still, she ran to the doctor.
As her vision gradually cleared, she saw the doctor's relaxed expression.
"The surgery went well. After eight hours of observation, if there are no complications, she can be transferred to a regular ward."
"Thank you, doctor."
Sophia let out a long breath, her legs weakening again. Her parents supported her, preventing her from falling.
"Thank goodness, thank goodness."
The three turned to see Ethan still there.
Mrs. Reed patted Sophia's arm: "You two need to talk."
Judging from Sophia's earlier revelation, it was clear that Ethan was as shocked as they were.
Now there was plenty of time to clear things up.
With Mia out of danger, Sophia finally felt genuine relief.
Looking at Ethan now, though still unable to smile, the weight in her heart had eased considerably.
The two went to the hospital rooftop. The cold wind cut across Sophia's face, bringing tears to her eyes.
Her eyes were already red and swollen, now feeling even more painful.
Ethan stood beside her, his voice carried by the wind: "That child—I thought you terminated the pregnancy back then."
So when Sophia had shouted those words earlier, he couldn't immediately accept it.
"I never imagined you'd kept her when I saw you at the hospital the day you decided to get rid of her."
Sophia let out a soft scoff, not bothering to explain why she had kept the baby.
"Whether I terminated or kept it, you never believed me anyway, did you?"
She still remembered that day when Ethan and Victoria had mocked her together.
To him, she had no credibility whatsoever. Nothing she said was worth believing, was it?
"That's because I didn't know at the time…"
Sophia turned to look at him, a complex smile on her face.
Just as he had never believed her, she now approached his words with the same skepticism.
She was curious to see how Ethan would justify himself.
A sudden gust of wind made Sophia stumble back two steps, and she heard Ethan's voice.
"I didn't know you were the woman that night." Ethan looked at her, his eyes filled with pain matching her own. "By the time I found out, I thought you had already terminated the pregnancy."
Sophia was silent for two seconds, realizing Ethan now knew the truth about what had happened back then.
That made it even harder to accept, didn't it?
"So you think we should never meet again, pretending that incident never happened?"
She had been set up by her cheating husband, who thought he could threaten her into staying.
She had nearly ruined her entire life because of this.
Yet in Ethan's mouth, this incident was as light as a feather.
"You might be able to do that, but I can't."
"That's not what I meant," Ethan protested.
"Then what did you mean? Mr. James, if Mia wakes up and tells us Jamie really did push her, what will you do?" Sophia deliberately challenged him.
