"Why would you ask that?"
Sophia couldn't process what he was saying, stubbornly pressing: "Is she or isn't she?"
"Of course not. Jamie's not my kid."
"Then why does she look so much like Mia?"
Ethan couldn't help but smile: "Probably because she's my cousin's daughter."
Sophia couldn't help but feel relieved.
Ethan hadn't cheated, and Jamie really was younger than Mia.
Besides, Jamie wasn't Ethan's child either.
"I've got one more question."
"Shoot."
"Are you single right now?"
"I'm divorced."
He was single, and Jamie wasn't his child.
Sophia's eyes welled up despite herself—Mia wouldn't be called a bastard anymore.
Ethan had already started walking toward her.
Sophia snapped back to reality and immediately told him to stop.
"I've got nothing else to say to you. You should go. I'm leaving too."
Ethan's steps halted. He stared straight at Sophia, speaking her name.
"Sophia Reed, next time we meet, I hope you won't be so hostile."
Hostile?
Ethan was calling everything she'd done recently hostile?
He really could wipe the slate clean.
Sophia let out a bitter laugh: "Just because Jamie isn't your kid doesn't make our past disappear into thin air. Ethan, we don't have to see each other again."
With that, Sophia hung up and walked back into the building.
Ethan watched her retreating figure from a distance until she disappeared completely before leaving.
He'd just gotten in his car when Victoria called.
Ethan quickly frowned, irritation flashing in his eyes. The phone buzzed until the last second before he reluctantly answered.
"What?"
The voice on the other end sounded entitled: "Mom and I are coming to Chicago in a few days. You know what you need to do."
Ethan's voice was as cold as his expression: "We're divorced."
A contemptuous laugh came through the phone: "Of course I know that, but isn't this exactly what you promised me when we got divorced?"
When they'd decided to divorce, Ethan had apologetically agreed she could put on an act in front of her family when necessary.
That one sentence had kept Victoria clinging to him for three years.
Ethan was silent for a few seconds, then stopped resisting.
"Tell me your flight details."
After hanging up, Ethan sat in his car and lit a cigarette.
His marriage to Victoria had ended long ago, yet it still felt like ongoing chaos.
Initially, he and Victoria had used each other for their own purposes, but after divorce, they were more entangled than real spouses.
He rarely regretted his decisions, but this one had really screwed him over.
After a long while, the cigarette burned out. Ethan tossed the butt into the ashtray.
He took one last look at the building where Sophia worked, then drove away.
When Mr. and Mrs. Reed decided to return to Paris, Sophia also put aside her work to travel with Mia.
She planned to live in Paris with Mia for a while to change scenery and clear her head.
The family left early for the airport.
Just arriving at the airport, Sophia suddenly felt unwell: "I need to hit the restroom."
Once in the bathroom, she realized she'd gotten her period.
Cursing the bad timing, she walked out of the stall.
While washing her hands, she suddenly saw a familiar face in the mirror.
The other woman spotted her immediately too, surprised for only a second before greeting her.
"Ms. Reed, long time no see."
"It really has been." Sophia smiled graciously, turning to face her with casual small talk. "Visiting Chicago, Ms. Lang? It's definitely worth exploring."
Sophia hadn't expected to run into Victoria after encountering Ethan.
Talk about enemies crossing paths.
"Ethan did tell me Chicago was worth visiting, so I came to see him."
Sophia smiled faintly, nodding with obvious dismissiveness: "Have fun."
Not wanting to waste more time with her, Sophia quickly headed for the exit.
But Victoria called after her: "You know we're divorced?"
Sophia didn't answer, but saw Victoria put on an "I knew it" expression.
"However things are between you two really isn't my business."
Sophia remained composed, but Victoria still didn't believe her.
She stared intensely at Sophia, hatred practically overflowing from her eyes: "Ethan divorced me because of you, didn't he?"
It sounded like a question but was really a statement of certainty.
Sophia didn't know why Victoria, who used to be so confident and composed, had become like this after just a few years.
Thinking she'd probably never see Victoria again and that her family was waiting for her, Sophia didn't want to waste her breath.
"Think whatever you want."
With that, she turned to leave, but Victoria followed her.
Victoria lunged forward, and before Sophia could react, Victoria had grabbed her by the hair.
"Why? Why did I give him everything, but all he ever saw was you!"
The sharp pain in her scalp and Victoria's twisted voice sent chills down Sophia's spine. She gripped Victoria's hands tightly, trying to control her strength to prevent injury to her own scalp.
"I'm not interested in whatever happened between you two. If you've got issues with him, take it up with him—what the hell does it have to do with me?"
Victoria showed no signs of letting up, so Sophia stopped just defending and started fighting back.
So the two women grappled with each other.
"Is it really worth turning into this over him?"
Sophia questioned her even as she despised her own behavior.
She must be crazy to be fighting with Victoria, who was clearly already unhinged.
Fortunately, Ethan arrived quickly and put an end to the chaos.
Victoria's mother supported Victoria while Ethan helped Sophia.
Sophia pushed him away, silently straightening her disheveled hair and clothes.
When she looked up, her expression was ice-cold: "You're a lawyer—you should understand what constitutes assault, right?"
"You…"
Sophia cut him off, addressing Victoria: "Listen up. I'm not interested in whatever new drama you two have going on. If there's a next time, I'm calling the cops."
But there wouldn't be a next time.
Sophia turned and walked away. Victoria tried to follow, but Ethan blocked her.
"Haven't you caused enough trouble?"
"You're protecting her! You've been protecting her this whole time! Ethan, did you forget you married ME?"
Victoria's voice was loud enough that Sophia could still hear it as she walked away.
She knew Victoria was mocking the fact that she and Ethan had come so close to marriage, but she didn't care anymore.
Sophia rejoined her parents, her eyes still showing faint traces of redness.
Mrs. Reed glanced at her: "What took you so long?"
"It's nothing. Let's go."
