After three years in Paris, Mia had completely transformed into an outgoing, spirited child.
Not only did she speak fluent French, but she would also directly tell Sophia "no."
Sophia's concerns had completely disappeared.
With Mr. and Mrs. Reed officially retired, they suggested that Mia should stay in Paris for school.
Sophia hadn't decided yet when she ran into someone unexpected.
The day she encountered Nathan, Sophia had just taken Mia to tour an elementary school.
Shortly after leaving the school, they bumped into Nathan.
He was still with a young woman by his side, no different from before.
Sophia was surprised that after all this time, his preferences remained so consistent.
Nathan was startled when he saw her, his gaze becoming even more intense when he spotted Mia beside her.
Sophia held Mia's hand and told her: "Mia, say hello to the uncle."
Mia smiled sweetly and called him uncle.
The light in Nathan's eyes dimmed after that word "uncle."
He adjusted his expression, trying not to look so disappointed.
"How have you been these past few years?"
"Pretty good. You look great too."
Sophia couldn't resist teasing him a little.
Back then, after she dropped the lawsuit, she had left Manhattan. Two years of separation later, she filed for divorce again.
Nathan, perhaps finally getting a clue, had immediately agreed.
Their divorce had gone relatively smoothly.
Probably because it went smoothly, they could now chat peacefully.
Nathan's attention was entirely on Mia, nearly ignoring his female companion.
His eyes fixed on Mia while asking Sophia: "It's been so long—want to grab dinner together?"
Sophia looked at his companion: "You can totally say no."
The young woman looked nervous, quickly waving her hands: "I don't mind at all."
Only then did Sophia agree to Nathan's invitation, taking Mia to dinner with the two of them.
During the meal, Nathan kept pestering Mia with questions, trying to get close to her.
After several questions, he finally asked what he really cared about: "How old are you?"
Sophia answered for him: "You're not Mia's father."
Nathan's face flushed with embarrassment as he defended himself: "I... of course I know that. I was just curious, you know?"
After knowing him for so many years, this was the first time Sophia had seen such an awkward expression on his face.
Sophia glanced at the young woman beside him, who also looked confused.
Sophia explained to her: "Sorry, I haven't mentioned—I'm Nathan's ex-wife. We've been divorced for a long time."
The young woman looked surprised, and Nathan took her hand to comfort her.
Sophia pretended not to notice.
After dinner, Sophia took Mia to the restroom. While waiting outside for Mia to wash her hands, Nathan approached her.
Without his female companion around, his questions became more direct.
"Did you get married later? To Ethan?"
The news of Ethan and Victoria's divorce probably wasn't a secret in Manhattan circles.
But Sophia hadn't expected that in these people's eyes, she and Ethan could only have that kind of relationship.
"Just that one time." Sophia explained, but saw complete confusion on Nathan's face.
He clearly didn't know which time she was referring to.
"When you set me up—that's when I had Mia."
Sophia's words were completely calm, but in contrast, Nathan's expression looked like it might crack.
"She... how could..."
He finally remembered the awful thing he'd done, but he never imagined Sophia would get pregnant from it.
"So that's why you insisted on divorcing me? Because of this child?"
"Mia was part of it, but more importantly, you cheated first and then set me up. A marriage like that really had no reason to continue."
But Nathan still wouldn't give up: "Didn't you ever think Mia might be my child?"
Sophia paused for two seconds before saying: "I considered it, but then I found out why you wouldn't acknowledge Paige's baby."
As soon as she spoke, everything around them went completely quiet.
Nathan froze too—he'd never imagined Sophia knew about that.
"Whether Paige cheated or not is uncertain, but you not believing the baby in her belly was yours is understandable."
"With her situation as precedent, if I'd told you I was pregnant, what would've been different?"
Nathan grew frantic: "It's not the same—we were married."
Nathan tried to argue further, but Sophia smiled instead of getting angry: "I don't think so."
"Nathan, when I married you, I never doubted your love for me. But from the moment you cheated, we stopped being husband and wife."
Mia had already come out of the restroom. Sophia took her hand and said her final words to Nathan.
"I hope you treat your partners better in the future."
She added with a touch of malicious pleasure: "And I hope your condition gets better soon."
Though a bit vindictive, at least she'd gotten her revenge.
Sophia's mood improved considerably.
As soon as they got home, Mrs. Reed asked how the school visit went.
"We should look at a few more. I'm still not sure if we're staying."
Hearing this, Mrs. Reed fell silent too.
She knew her daughter—Sophia wasn't like her and her husband, able to stay here indefinitely.
She and her husband had gotten used to it, but for Sophia, this would never truly be home.
She and her husband had speculated many times about why Sophia had decided to bring Mia here to live with them.
Initially, they thought Sophia wouldn't stay long and would soon take Mia back to the States.
But three years had passed, and Mia was increasingly integrated into the environment, while Sophia still seemed to live in her own world.
She knew Sophia could leave at any time.
It was just a matter of when.
"If you want to go back, your father and I won't stop you."
Sophia remained composed: "I'm still just considering it. Hard to say."
She couldn't even tell if her decision to come to Paris had been impulsive.
Or whether wanting to leave now was the result of careful consideration.
On Mia's sixth birthday, Sophia got a call from Liam—first wishing Mia happy birthday, then filling Sophia in on some domestic news.
"Oh, by the way, the Lang family's in trouble."
