Sophia paused: "The Langs?"
"Ethan's ex-wife Victoria's family."
"Oh."
Sophia was completely unfazed. Her last encounter with Victoria had been a literal fight, and she really had no good feelings toward the woman.
She cared even less about whatever was happening with her family now.
Liam seemed to guess her thoughts and continued: "It's pretty serious. Word is it's affecting Ethan too."
Sophia went quiet.
"If it weren't for his other partner holding things down, their firm would've gone under."
"That bad?"
How could the Lang family's problems drag Stellar down with them? What kind of situation could nearly take down Ethan's entire firm?
"Supposedly it's connected to their marriage back then, but I don't know the details."
Sophia's expression sharpened: "You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"
Liam on the other end didn't even deny it, basically confirming his ulterior motives.
Catching on, Sophia let out a cold laugh: "Liam Taylor, you're unbelievable."
Sophia returned to the States without telling anyone.
She didn't even bring Mia—came back to Chicago alone.
She used to think Manhattan was her real home, but surprisingly, after just a few years, she'd developed a sense of belonging in Chicago too.
She specifically called reception to make an appointment with Liam, and only after learning he wasn't in the office did she show up at the company.
The receptionist recognized her and was shocked: "You're back?"
Sophia nodded casually. The receptionist picked up her phone: "Mr. Taylor's not in right now. Should I call him?"
"No need. Just get Amy and tell her to come to my office."
Amy was Liam's assistant who'd been with the Chicago branch since day one.
The receptionist nodded dumbly and messaged Amy.
Sophia returned to her office—everything exactly as she'd left it, unchanged.
But it still felt foreign somehow.
The office was regularly cleaned, so she settled right in without any discomfort.
Soon, Amy knocked on her door.
"Come in."
Sophia had Amy sit on the couch across from her. "Don't be nervous. Nothing serious—just have a few questions."
Amy nodded, still a bit on edge.
Sophia's company image wasn't exactly warm and fuzzy. Back when she and Liam were both in the office, they'd typically played good cop, bad cop.
Sophia handled the ice-cold intimidation while Liam took care of everyone's emotional needs.
Now, with Sophia returning after years away and Liam conveniently absent, being called in for a one-on-one was definitely nerve-wracking.
"How's Liam been these past few years? Doing alright?"
Amy was clearly caught off guard, taking a moment to respond: "Mr. Taylor seems to be doing well."
Sophia tried to look more approachable, even forcing a smile.
"While I was away, who's he been dealing with? You'd know better than anyone."
She raised an eyebrow, practically broadcasting that she wanted Amy to spill on Liam.
Amy hemmed and hawed before finally standing up: "Ms. Reed, just say what you want to know. I'll tell you whatever I can."
"Look how nervous you are. I just want to know—did we change our legal counsel?"
Amy nodded, relieved: "We did change."
Sophia stared at her, waiting for more.
"It's now Mr. James from Stellar Law Firm."
Sophia smiled knowingly. She'd figured as much.
Liam suddenly bringing up Ethan and Victoria's situation meant something had definitely changed.
Before this, he wouldn't have been one to put in a good word for Ethan.
She hadn't expected Liam to pull something like this behind the scenes.
He really wasn't worried she'd find out if she suddenly came back.
"Got it. You can go."
Sophia smiled at Amy and dismissed her.
The moment Amy left the office, she frantically messaged Liam.
[GET BACK HERE NOW!]
Between calls and messages from both reception and his assistant, Liam quickly realized something was seriously wrong.
He'd been heading to the restaurant Marcus had picked, but immediately turned around and called Marcus to say he'd be late.
By the time he rushed back to the office, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
The timid ones kept their heads down, while the bolder ones just pointed toward Sophia's office.
He immediately understood.
"You didn't tell me you were coming back—I could've picked you up." Liam acted like nothing was wrong, pushing open the door with exaggerated enthusiasm.
"Perfect timing. Marcus made reservations to welcome you back."
"Sounds great." Sophia readily agreed, standing up and grabbing her bag. As she headed for the door, she casually asked, "Should we invite Ethan along?"
