Liam's head drooped: "You already know."
Sophia had reached the doorway, deliberately saying: "Well look at that—I guess finding out now isn't too late, right?"
"Where'd you learn to be so sarcastic?" Liam couldn't help but complain, then familiarly pushed her toward the exit. "Let's go eat, and I'll explain everything."
Sophia didn't push back and followed Liam to the restaurant.
After greeting Marcus, Sophia sat beside him while Liam had to sit alone on the other side.
The moment he sat down, he started explaining why he'd worked with Ethan: "When shit hit the fan that badly, if I hadn't taken a stand, you might never have seen him again."
Sophia stayed quiet, making Liam frantic: "Whatever else he is, he's still Mia's dad. I couldn't just watch him go down."
"What if Mia grows up curious about her father, only to find out we didn't lift a finger to help? What if she hates us for it?"
Sophia smiled faintly: "So you're saying you did it for my own good."
"Are you being reasonable here?" He was getting more and more worked up.
Marcus tried to play peacemaker: "Alright, alright, we finally get to reunite—let's not fight."
Sophia looked at him in amazement: "Your way of handling things has gotten so smooth now—that's impressive."
"How come you don't compliment me?"
Liam felt indignant. Marcus had just opened his mouth and said one thing, while he'd actually done something substantial.
Did she not get his value?
Sophia suddenly gave him a look: "Do you need me to roast you a couple times before you're satisfied?"
"You…"
Liam was about to argue when Marcus quickly intervened, taking Sophia's side: "She's just mad you didn't tell her first. Just apologize and call it good?"
Sophia used to think Liam understood her best, but now it seemed Marcus was the real mind reader.
"Fine, not telling you first was my bad, but you wouldn't listen anyway. You came out swinging with the sarcasm—who could handle that?"
Liam complained while watching Sophia pull out her phone.
He asked: "What are you doing?"
"Booking a flight back to Paris."
Before Sophia finished speaking, Liam snatched her phone away.
"I was wrong, I was totally wrong! Your Majesty, please have mercy and forgive me!"
"Yeah, I'm a total ass for this. I should've given you a heads-up instead of letting you find out yourself. My bad, okay?"
Liam begged and pleaded until Sophia finally let it go.
During dinner, Liam only briefly mentioned the Lang family situation, speaking so vaguely that Sophia couldn't understand.
But she didn't bother pressing for details.
Liam was never unclear when he spoke—if he was being vague, it meant he wanted her to find out from Ethan later.
"What about Victoria? Where'd she end up?"
The Lang family's troubles hadn't affected the children, so Victoria hadn't followed in her elders' footsteps, but Liam hadn't mentioned where she'd gone, making Sophia curious.
Liam shook his head: "After everything went down, she disappeared somewhere. Probably too proud to let people see her looking rough."
"If you're worried about her, you should be more concerned about Ethan. After all that, he aged like ten years."
Sophia felt stirrings in her heart but still didn't want to admit it.
Her response sounded mocking: "Since when did you two become such good friends?"
Liam was stunned, then immediately cursed her: "Ungrateful!"
They bickered through the entire meal, both still annoyed when they parted ways.
Marcus dragged Liam away while Sophia drove off in Liam's car.
She drove aimlessly around downtown, unconsciously ending up outside Stellar Law Firm.
Stellar's Chicago office, like the Manhattan one, occupied its own two-story building.
Sophia couldn't remember if this was her first visit. As she parked roadside, she felt somewhat dazed.
The roadside camphor trees were lush with foliage, releasing their distinctive fragrance.
The scent drifted through her car window as Sophia stared blankly at the asphalt.
After an unknown amount of time, someone suddenly knocked on her car window.
She instinctively lowered the passenger window, only to see Ethan's face.
Seeing it was her, he was clearly stunned too.
His frozen smile and her bewildered expression reflected in each other's eyes.
