                    "When did you get back?"
After a moment of silence, Ethan spoke first.
He was making casual conversation like old friends meeting again.
But Sophia avoided his gaze: "This morning."
Not wanting Ethan to think she'd come specifically to see him, she immediately released the handbrake, ready to leave.
Ethan called out to her at the car window: "You haven't been up to see our office yet. Want to come up for some coffee?"
Looking at his sincere face, Sophia suddenly couldn't bring herself to refuse.
The Chicago office had the same style as the Manhattan one—both going for that solid, established look.
The only difference was probably that the Chicago courtyard had many flower beds, adding more warmth to the space.
The interior layout was identical to Manhattan—every corner, every desk piled high with work, all testament to Ethan's success.
Yet even this level of success had nearly crumbled recently.
Ethan brought Sophia to his office, and when he said coffee, he actually brewed her a cup.
Sophia accepted the coffee and thanked him.
Ethan sat down casually, smiling as he said: "It's been years since we've seen each other."
Sophia didn't respond.
He continued on his own: "When I ran into you at the airport, things were pretty chaotic. By the time I got my bearings, you were already gone."
There always seemed to be some twist of fate between him and Sophia.
Ethan looked at her, a spark of light igniting in his eyes: "How long are you planning to stay this time? Didn't Mia come back with you?"
Sophia replied calmly: "I came back alone. There are some things I need to confirm."
Hearing this, Ethan's face showed only a half-second of confusion before quickly shifting to understanding.
"I heard from Liam that the Lang family had problems, and you almost got caught up in it too..."
Ethan maintained a faint smile: "It wasn't that serious—just assisting with the investigation. I really didn't know anything, so it was fine."
Sophia knew he was deliberately downplaying it because he didn't want her to worry.
"Don't get me wrong—I'm not asking because I'm worried about you. Whether you have problems affects whether my daughter can live in U.S in the future."
"I'm only doing this for my daughter."
Her words were harsh, but Ethan's expression never changed.
As if no matter how cruel Sophia's words were, he could accept them calmly and gently.
"I thought after you took her away, you'd never let her come back."
There was inevitable melancholy in Ethan's voice as he said this.
He clearly had a daughter, yet six years after her birth, he'd barely seen her a few times.
He didn't even know what his daughter looked like now.
"Is she still as adorable as when she was little?"
He'd only seen Mia at kindergarten, and when she was hospitalized, he hadn't been able to see her then either.
After that, Sophia had taken Mia and left completely.
But Sophia wouldn't answer him. She stood up coldly: "As long as nothing's wrong, that's what matters. I've confirmed what I needed to. I'm leaving now."
"Sophia." Ethan called her name: "You made a special trip to the law firm just to confirm this?"
"Not really special—I was just passing by."
Faced with Ethan, Sophia habitually said the opposite of what she meant.
Hearing this, the light in Ethan's eyes dimmed, but he quickly forced it back: "Are you free tonight? Want to grab dinner? It's been ages since we sat down and had a proper meal together."
If Ethan hadn't mentioned it, Sophia would have almost forgotten.
Since their breakup, she and Ethan had never shared a meal.
"Sorry, I just got back to the States. There's a lot of stuff at home I need to sort through and confirm. I probably don't have time for that."
Ethan quickly nodded: "No problem. Maybe next time."
Sophia and Ethan walked to the law firm entrance together. Sophia spoke up: "You can see me off to here."
Without waiting for Ethan to respond, Sophia was already walking quickly toward her car.
Within moments of getting in, the car started and drove away.
Ethan stood there for quite a while before finally returning to the law firm.
