Sophia didn't know what to do. She removed her coat and tied it around Jamie's waist to slow the bleeding.
"She needs immediate medical attention."
Victoria had completely lost reason: "If you dare let anyone approach, I'll slash this child's throat immediately."
Sophia looked at Mia's silently flowing tears, her heart feeling torn apart.
"What do you want me to do?"
Sirens sounded in the distance, but Sophia remained vigilant.
Victoria threw her a knife: "I hate your face the most. Cut it up."
Sophia picked up the knife: "If I cut my face, will you release these children?"
"How could I let you off so easily? Sophia Reed, why are you being so naive?" Victoria laughed maniacally. "If it weren't for you and Ethan, how could I have become like this? I want you both dead! All dead!"
Sophia gripped the knife tightly, closing her eyes forcefully: "What will make you release them?"
"Since you care about them so much, stab yourself a few times. If I'm satisfied, I might consider releasing one."
"Alright, I agree."
Victoria leaned against a tree, making it difficult to control her from behind. Sophia exchanged glances with two plainclothes officers behind her, then raised her hand and cut her arm.
The intense pain accompanied by blood gushing out made Sophia dizzy.
She nearly lost her balance, while Victoria laughed with delight.
Mia, unable to contain her anger, bit Victoria's arm hard.
Victoria loosened her grip slightly from the pain, allowing Mia to break free and run.
But tree roots tangled the ground. Mia had only taken one step when she twisted her ankle and fell.
"You little bitch!"
Victoria raised her knife high, and Sophia desperately lunged forward.
"Mia!"
As Victoria's knife slashed toward Mia, Ethan had already thrown himself in front, covering the child.
Victoria's blade cut a deep gash across Ethan's back. Before she could make another move, the two plainclothes officers subdued her.
The knife was kicked away, and the explosives were quickly disarmed.
As Victoria was pinned to the ground, her eyes remained fixed on Sophia.
"Why won't you die! Why won't you both just die!"
"I'll kill you! I'll kill all of you!"
Victoria's screams continued until she was forced into the police car.
Sophia held Mia tightly, choking back sobs: "I'm so sorry..."
Only after confirming she was safe did Mia allow herself to cry, clutching Sophia's sleeve and wailing.
The three were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Sophia's wound was the lightest and quickly bandaged.
Mia's seemingly twisted ankle was actually a fractured bone.
Sophia decided to keep Mia hospitalized for a few days and arrange psychological counseling.
Such an event would traumatize even adults, let alone a six-year-old child.
She still didn't know how terrified Mia must have been, watching her friend collapse before her, then being held hostage herself.
"This is all my fault."
Ethan had just had his back wound bandaged when he came to Mia's room.
If he had handled things better previously, Victoria wouldn't have disappeared only to find Mia's school and take Mia hostage.
Sophia no longer wanted to delve into who was right or wrong, or whose fault was greater. She didn't care why Victoria had become this way.
What mattered was that Victoria had harmed innocent people.
"How much could you have changed? When her family fell apart, you could do nothing—you were nearly implicated yourself."
After speaking, Ethan fell silent too.
The Lang family's downfall was an unchangeable fact. He had barely protected himself, let alone someone else.
Sophia sighed: "Mia told me that when they realized someone was following them, Jamie offered to swap backpacks with her, which is why Jamie was mistaken for her and stabbed by Victoria."
She could hardly believe this was a solution children could devise. It was only because Victoria was too deranged that it hadn't worked.
With Jamie injured because of Mia, she felt terrible, and Mia surely felt worse.
"I just visited Jamie. The doctor says she'll be fine. Neither you nor Mia should feel guilty."
When he'd learned of Jamie's injury, his heart had nearly stopped.
But Jamie's mother had never told him Jamie attended this school.
Some outlandish suspicions surfaced in his mind, but he knew if he voiced them, everything would change.
"Get Mia discharged quickly, or move her to another hospital."
"I'll contact a child psychologist. Don't worry."
Though not understanding why Ethan suggested this, Sophia was already concerned and soon arranged Mia's transfer.
When Ethan visited again days later, Mia had just fallen asleep.
As Sophia left the room, she was wiping tears. Turning, she ran into Ethan coming to see them.
"What's wrong?" Ethan's heart tightened as he looked toward the room.
Sophia, afraid his noise might wake Mia, pulled him aside.
With a heart full of pain, Sophia confided: "Every night, Mia wakes up crying, feeling she's responsible for what happened to Jamie."
She also felt guilty toward Jamie but didn't know why Ethan consistently prevented her from visiting the girl.
"The police have discovered that Jamie's mother told Victoria..."
