Just as she reached the door, she saw a distinguished-looking man leaning against the corridor wall.
Seeing Sophia, he smiled, revealing two dimples.
"Babe, I happened to be here and overheard people talking about you. I got into an argument with them—you're not mad, are you?"
Ethan, walking two steps behind Sophia, recognized the man and clenched his fist tightly.
This was the man Sophia had been holding hands with in that photo!
Sophia turned to look at the innocent-looking Zoe with some exasperation.
"Zoe, it's been how many years? Your face blindness still hasn't improved?"
Zoe laughed awkwardly. "Isn't he your husband? He was defending you so fiercely, I thought..."
Sophia shook her head and walked toward the man. "Liam Taylor, just let it go."
Liam raised an eyebrow. "Fine."
He glanced at the expressionless Ethan, flashed a grin, and deliberately put his arm around Sophia's shoulders.
"We'll be leaving then."
His tone dripped with provocation.
Ethan's eyes instantly turned cold.
Once they were in the car, Sophia finally exhaled: "How'd you end up here?"
Liam smiled. "Truly just passing by. Didn't expect to see you with Ethan James—I thought you two might have gotten back together."
Sophia paused, her gaze shifting to the window.
"He's engaged. Don't joke like that."
Liam was silent for a few seconds. "Aren't you going to tell him the truth about what happened back then?"
Sophia shook her head. "No point."
Screech—
The braking sound was pronounced as Liam's face turned grim.
"No point? Was drinking until you had a gastric hemorrhage after the breakup no point? Or secretly going abroad every year to check on him no point?"
"Sophia Reed, can you stop being such a coward? If you love him, go for it! What the hell are you afraid of?"
Sophia's nails dug into her palm as she lowered her head, desperately fighting back the warmth in her eyes.
Afraid of what? Certainly afraid that Ethan only felt disgust toward her.
Even more afraid that if he knew the truth, he'd simply dismiss it with a casual "that's all in the past."
The car fell silent for a moment.
Eventually, Liam broke the silence. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked you to pretend to be my girlfriend for my parents back then."
Sophia forced a smile. "It wasn't your fault. I agreed to help you willingly."
As she spoke, she noticed the ring on Liam's finger. "You're married?"
Liam beamed with happiness. "Yeah, registered abroad recently."
Sophia gave him a genuine smile. "Congratulations."
Liam started the car again, changing the subject.
"I couldn't get the hotel surveillance footage you asked about, but I did get the guest list from the 8th."
Sophia didn't look disappointed. "The list works too—at least it gives us a direction."
Liam paused before continuing. "There's something else. Today Nathan took his mistress to our hospital for a prenatal checkup."
Sophia's mind went blank as she murmured: "Paige is pregnant?"
"No wonder... Nathan was in such a rush to buy property. He wanted to make a home for her."
She and Nathan had been married for so long without any signs of pregnancy.
But Paige had only been with Nathan for less than three months...
Sophia could only laugh bitterly. Some connections simply couldn't be forced.
Liam dropped her off at her building and drove away. Sophia had just entered the elevator when her phone buzzed.
Nathan: [Babe, I've thought it through. No matter what, I won't agree to the divorce]
Looking at this message, Sophia felt nothing but absurdity.
He had a child on the way with his mistress, yet claimed he wouldn't divorce her?
Sophia swiped her finger across the screen, deleting the message without a second thought.
But the next day, she received a call from Ethan: "Come to the firm. There's a new development."
At Stellar Law Firm, Sophia's heart sank seeing Ethan's grave expression across from her.
"What's happened, Mr. James?"
Ethan pushed a medical report toward her.
"Your husband has been diagnosed with azoospermia, so the child you're carrying cannot possibly be his."
"If your pregnancy is discovered, it becomes his leverage against you."
Sophia stared at the report, feeling the room spin around her.
Just then, the office door opened, and an assistant walked in with his head down.
"Mr. James, I checked the financial records for the Hans Hotel on the 8th of last month, as you requested."
He looked up and saw Sophia suddenly freeze like a statue...
The assistant's words inevitably made Sophia recall that night's memories.
But beyond the business dinner before getting drunk, she couldn't remember anything.
Why was Ethan investigating the surveillance footage from that night?
Sophia's gaze fell on the outwardly calm man before her.
Ethan glanced up, his tone pressuring. "Can't you see a client is present? My personal matters can wait."
The word "client" made Sophia's heart clench.
Indeed, between her and Ethan now, there was nothing beyond a professional relationship.
Sophia stood up, suppressing the emotions churning inside her, and quietly said, "Mr. James, if you're busy, I'll leave now."
Ethan didn't stop her, but before she left, he added:
"From now on, I expect complete honesty from you. Any withholding of information will directly impact the case outcome."
Sophia nodded and pushed open the door.
Only after she disappeared did Ethan withdraw his gaze and turn to the assistant.
"Give me the documents."
The assistant, who had barely dared to breathe, quickly handed over the file.
Ethan casually flipped through it, but after just two pages, he suddenly froze.
He lowered his eyes to a specific name on the list, a flash of enigmatic light crossing his gaze.
