Meanwhile, Sophia drove aimlessly around the city, unconsciously stopping in front of a certain skyscraper.
Looking at the towering Wade Enterprises headquarters, her thoughts became disjointed.
Nathan could control such a massive corporation—he wasn't a man without resources. If he discovered she was pregnant...
Sophia suddenly shuddered, not daring to continue that train of thought.
She turned the car around and headed straight home.
When she parked and went upstairs, she found Nathan waiting at her door.
She paused, feeling a flutter of apprehension.
The next moment, Nathan's eyes lit up, and he walked directly toward her.
He grabbed Sophia's hand, his eyes full of remorse. "I'm sorry, babe. I shouldn't have fooled around. Can you forgive me?"
Sophia only felt goosebumps spread across the skin where he touched her.
She instinctively pulled her hand away. "Nathan, you shouldn't be here."
Nathan looked at his empty hand, his eyes flashing with darkness.
"Sophia, is it just about the affair? Do you have to fixate on it?"
"I have plenty of ways to prevent this divorce. The more difficult you make things now, the harder your life will be later."
His blatant threat made Sophia's face pale.
But thinking about what Nathan had done before, she felt physically sick.
Sophia actually retched once, making Nathan's face darken to the point of dripping water.
She steadied herself, trying to maintain a normal expression.
"I won't continue with you, even if it costs me everything."
She slowly raised her eyes, a sad look crossing her face. "Or, even if I beg you, would you let me go?"
Sophia had always been cool and proud in front of Nathan. Even in their most intimate moments, she still seemed somehow unreachable.
This was the first time Nathan had seen a pleading expression on her face.
After a moment of shock, anger suddenly surged within him.
"Let you go? So you can rekindle things with that James guy? I'm not that generous!"
Sophia could only laugh bitterly.
First Liam, now Nathan—why did everyone think she could start over with Ethan?
Sophia flashed back to Ethan's cold face and found it laughable.
She shook her head. "Nathan, this has nothing to do with anyone else."
But the next moment, Nathan laughed coldly.
"Nothing to do with anyone else? Then it must have something to do with the child you're carrying?"
The hallway instantly became deathly silent.
Sophia looked at Nathan's mocking eyes, digging her nails so deeply into her skin that it was the only thing keeping her composed.
She pressed her lips together. "Who told you I was pregnant?"
Nathan didn't hide anything. "A friend saw you visiting an OB-GYN several times."
Sophia gritted her teeth.
"I was just feeling unwell and had a gynecological exam. If you don't believe me, you can check with the hospital directly."
Her confident demeanor made Nathan fall silent.
After a while, he spoke again. "Sophia, even if you are pregnant, I could accept the child as mine."
"As long as you don't leave me, anything is fine."
His black eyes were rarely so sincere, just like when he had proposed to her.
But in an instant, Sophia dismissed any wavering feelings.
She'd been fooled once and wouldn't fall for it a second time.
She pressed her fingerprint to the lock and walked inside, shutting Nathan out.
Leaning against the cold metal door, her racing heart finally returned to normal.
Walking to the living room, she immediately dialed Ethan's number.
Ring, ring, ring—
After three rings, the call connected.
Ethan's husky voice came through: "Something wrong?"
Sophia got straight to the point: "If I terminate this pregnancy, what are the chances of winning the case?"
The other end suddenly went silent, with only the sound of their breathing filling the phone line.
After a long while, Ethan finally spoke slowly: "Sophia Reed, you really are ruthless when it comes to money."
His scathing words cut like a knife, piercing Sophia's heart through the phone.
She opened her mouth but couldn't say anything.
Ethan's voice turned cold: "I can't give you a definitive answer about this."
"I'm your divorce attorney, not your executioner."
Sophia remained silent for three seconds, about to explain, when she heard a faint, blurry female voice: "Ethan, who is it?"
Ethan's voice instantly softened.
"A client. Sorry if we woke you. Go back to sleep—I'll take this outside."
Sophia heard some rustling before Ethan's voice returned.
"How you handle this child is your decision. I have no right to judge."
He paused, as if unable to help himself.
"You really haven't changed. You never think about consequences, nor do you take responsibility for them."
"If you hadn't been unfaithful in your marriage, you wouldn't be making such an irresponsible decision now."
His words completely drained Sophia's will to explain.
Neither before nor now had Ethan ever believed her or wanted to hear her explanations.
Sophia fought back the sting in her nose and spoke hoarsely: "I apologize for the disturbance, Mr. James."
After hanging up, Sophia gently caressed her abdomen, a wave of desolation washing over her.
She whispered softly: "I'm sorry... you came at the wrong time..."
