The next day, Sophia entered a women's clinic known for its discretion.
Just inside the door after registering, she spotted Ethan and Victoria in the hallway.
Victoria was holding some forms—Sophia immediately recognized the words "Preconception Checkup" on them.
In that instant, her heart felt as if it had been punched hard.
When her eyes met Ethan's, Sophia could barely breathe.
But the next moment, Ethan walked past her holding Victoria's hand, without saying a single word.
Sophia watched his retreating figure, sitting down on a bench in the hallway, letting the cold permeate her entire body.
After waiting about ten minutes on the bench, her number was called.
She entered the examination room to find an older female doctor looking at her report with a grave expression.
"Ms. Reed, your uterine wall is very thin. After this termination, you may find it difficult to conceive again."
Sophia's heart sank heavily.
After a long silence, Sophia looked up: "Doctor, I need to reconsider."
Sophia hardly knew how she made it out of the clinic.
Sitting in her car, her chest felt unbearably tight.
She wanted to scream, to wail at the top of her lungs.
But in the end, all her emotions clogged her throat, making her chest feel like it might explode.
Just as she was on the verge of breaking down, her phone buzzed.
It was Liam calling.
"Sophia, the Hans Hotel found the guest information for your room that night."
Suddenly, Sophia felt her heart race with anxiety. Her voice trembled as she asked: "Who was it?"
After a long silence, Liam finally uttered a name.
"Ethan James."
Those words struck Sophia like thunder, making her head buzz.
After a long moment, she finally found her voice: "Impossible. It couldn't have been him."
If Ethan had been the man that night, he would never have acted so indifferent around her afterward.
Liam sighed: "That room had no other occupant besides Ethan James that night."
"I'm just telling you the facts. I suggest you ask him directly."
Sophia didn't respond.
Waves of dizziness rushed to her head, preventing any reaction.
Until Liam's urgent voice brought her back to reality: "Sophia!"
Only then did she manage to respond mechanically: "I see."
Her hand holding the phone fell limply.
How could it be Ethan? How could it possibly be Ethan!
Sophia felt her temples throbbing uncontrollably.
Sitting in her car, she felt the air gradually thinning.
Just as she was feeling suffocated, Ethan's figure suddenly appeared in her line of sight.
Sophia instantly gripped the steering wheel tighter.
Ethan stood there on his phone, his expression tense, as if facing a difficult problem.
Inexplicably, Sophia recalled the time she had called Ethan eighteen times.
The hesitation and anxiety had all transformed into determination to leave when he didn't answer.
She opened the car door and walked straight toward Ethan.
Ethan hung up and turned to see Sophia standing behind him.
He paused, his expression cooling: "Ms. Reed, if you have any business, please contact me during office hours."
With that, he started to walk away.
But Sophia looked at him and asked firmly: "Where were you on the night of the 8th last month?"
