Ethan's footsteps instantly halted.
Two seconds later, he turned back, his face displaying a cold, all-knowing smile.
"I'm not sure what authority you have to interrogate me."
His mind flashed to the list his assistant had handed him, his smile turning even more mocking.
"Or do you think I was the one that night?"
One sentence plunged Sophia into an abyss.
It wasn't him...
Ethan put his phone back in his pocket and spoke coolly: "I did book a room that night, but it was for a client."
"If you need, I can give you his contact information."
Sophia was stung by his undisguised contempt and mockery, her eyes reddening.
She stepped back and said quietly: "That won't be necessary."
With that, she no longer had the courage to stand before Ethan and practically fled.
Ethan remained where he was, watching her retreating figure, a hint of irritation rising in his heart.
He took out his phone, scrolling to a client's name. Just as his finger was about to tap it, he paused as he let out a sardonic laugh: "Ethan James, stop wasting your energy on her."
Then he turned off the screen and walked away.
At the clinic entrance, their figures moved in opposite directions, gradually disappearing from each other's sight.
After leaving the clinic, Sophia's mind was in complete disarray.
She decided to drive to her usual bar.
As soon as she entered, she bumped into Ryan, whom she hadn't seen in a while.
Sophia noticed his exhausted appearance and gently averted her gaze.
Modern investors weren't fools—if it weren't for Ethan once being on the school team, she wouldn't have invested in a university basketball team with no achievements.
Ryan felt a pang in his heart seeing her distant manner.
He straightened his collar and spoke in a raspy voice: "Sophia, take me off your blacklist. I have something to show you."
Before Sophia could react, the young man brushed past her, leaving only a faint scent of mint.
She rubbed her temples, took out her phone, and removed Ryan from her blacklist.
Just as she sat down at a booth, a video popped up in Ryan's chat window.
The video wasn't long, only eight seconds.
Sophia pressed her lips together and hit play.
Soon, Nathan's drunken voice came through.
"My wife's just too high and mighty. I had no choice but to set her up to make a fundamental mistake—makes her easier to control..."
Sophia's trembling hand closed the video, an icy chill spreading throughout her body.
That night had been Nathan's setup?
In a flash, Sophia remembered that before going to that business dinner, Nathan had uncharacteristically brought her a bowl of soup.
Sophia pressed hard against her temples, bloodshot eyes slowly spreading across her gaze.
What kind of abyss was her marriage?
At this point, Sophia had no heart to drown her sorrows in alcohol.
She quickly left the bar and drove straight to the law firm.
Upon entering, she headed toward Ethan's office as usual, only to be stopped by the receptionist.
"Ms. Reed, I'm sorry, but your case has been transferred to another lawyer."
Sophia's heart sank: "Why?"
The receptionist smiled politely: "Mr. James has taken extended leave, reportedly for a honeymoon with his wife. Please don't worry, our firm never disappoints clients. Your new lawyer is also known in the industry..."
Sophia could no longer listen to the rest.
She raised her hand to stop the receptionist: "That's fine. I'm withdrawing my case."
This was no longer a simple divorce case but a criminal matter involving her husband's deliberate setup.
This kind of situation, she couldn't bring herself to explain to anyone else.
Sophia walked out of the firm and stood in the sunlight, yet couldn't feel any warmth at all.
After standing for a long time, she slowly took out her phone and dialed Liam.
"Liam, I need your hacker boyfriend's help..."
