Only Cassandra knew the truth—the organization had staged her death. There would be no engagement, no future with Matthew. In seven days, on what was supposed to be their engagement day, he'd receive news of her "death" in an explosion. No body. No closure.
The next morning, the nanny greeted her with an update.
"Mr. Lawrence worked late after his meeting. He's worried sick about you—afraid you'd do something reckless. He barely slept, camped out on the sofa outside your room, and left at dawn to get your favorite lasagna jars."
Cassandra stirred her milk, face unreadable. Classic Matthew. The cutthroat CEO who made rivals tremble turned into a lovesick fool at home—cooking for her, spoiling her, even massaging her feet. His devotion was almost suffocating.
When Matthew returned, arms full of lasagna jars, the nanny sighed.
"Mr. Lawrence is such a good man. So thoughtful."
Cassandra forced a polite smile but stayed silent. Breakfast passed in heavy quiet, tension thick between them.
Finally, Matthew spoke. His voice was low, raw with something like fear.
"Cassey… stay away from that punk, okay?"
She blinked, caught off guard. He softened his tone.
"Every time I see him giving you things, I—" His jaw tightened. "I'm terrified you'll leave me for him."
A bitter laugh almost escaped her. The "punk" was Thomas Lawrence—Matthew's estranged half-brother. Disguised as a man, Thomas had been searching for his sister while secretly feeding intel to the White Team—a truth Cassandra couldn't share without blowing her cover.
Three months ago, Matthew had caught them together. No explanation convinced him. That night, he drowned himself in whiskey and ended up in Julia's bed.
Later, at the party, Julia made her entrance—uninvited, dress clinging, marks peeking through the fabric. Cassandra felt Matthew tense beside her, his breath catching as Julia strutted in.
Once, he'd sneered at Julia, called her desperate. Now, the way his gaze followed her betrayed everything.
