As dawn broke, Cassandra was met with an unsettling sight. Taxis throughout the city flashed glowing messages on their rooftop signs: [Cassey baby, go home!]
The words haunted her everywhere she turned. Skyscraper billboards displayed the same desperate plea: [Cassey baby, waiting for you to come home!]
Even the radio crackled with the announcement:
"Attention, Ms. Cassandra—your fiancé, Mr. Lawrence, is searching for you. Please call him immediately at 156…"
A bitter smile twisted Cassandra's lips. The rain fell harder as she dragged herself back home, wondering how Matthew would react when news of her "death" broke in a few days.
As she reached the house, Matthew burst through the door, his eyes wild with panic. He seized her, pulling her into a suffocating embrace.
"Cassey! Cassey…" His voice broke. "Do you have any idea what you put me through? I thought—God, I thought something happened to you!"
Tears streaked his face as his trembling hands cradled hers. Once, the sight of this powerful man crumbling would have shattered her heart. Now, it left her hollow.
Two shaken drivers stood in the living room, visibly relieved at her return. Behind them, two bloodied thieves writhed on the floor, groaning in pain. Matthew's voice turned icy as he vowed, "Anyone who touches you will regret it."
Cassandra let out a hollow laugh. "What if the person who hurt me…" she murmured under her breath, too quiet for him to hear, "...is you?"
Half an hour earlier, Julia had sent her a venomous text:
"Must be tough, Cassandra. Even when Matthew's in bed with me, he still calls your name."
Attached was a recording—undeniable proof of their betrayal.
Cassandra didn't cry. Didn't scream. Instead, she saved every message, every piece of evidence. One day, they would be the knives she'd drive straight into Matthew's heart.
Four days until the engagement. Cassandra accompanied Matthew to a routine hospital checkup. He swore he wouldn't leave her side this time.
Then his phone started buzzing.
"Ignore it," he muttered, silencing the call. But the vibrations didn't stop. Ten minutes later, the hospital staff glared until he stepped outside.
When he returned, his expression was grim. Cassandra's heart braced for the next betrayal.
