Devine spent the next day with Nicholas, helping Sunny, and her family put the store to rights. They’d brought in one of their smaller crews to help with remodeling the outdoor roof, though Sunny opted to keep the enormous quartz columns.
“They’ll remind me of you when you’re not here,” she whispered and nipped his lip.
He would have to get used to her PDAs, but that wasn’t so bad. Hell. Who was he kidding? Devine could not keep his hands off her and he loved the fact that it seemed reciprocal.
Christ, she was perfect for him. Here he’d thought the modern age had ruined his chances at finding happiness, but Sunny with her charming curls in wild, radiant disarray, her tight black leggings hugging her gorgeous ass, topped with a flowing, green blouse that she wore without a bra, and yellow Crocs on her feet, with little turkey charms stuck to them, could not have existed in any other time.
His surprise mate was—in a word—breathtaking, and Devine could not have anyone better. Throughout the day, she’d caught him staring, and this delightful pink blush would creep up her neck and spread to her cheeks.
Irresistible woman. Meus lupus.
“Hey, they got this. Do you want to go for a run?”
“Oh, um, think it’s safe with the storm and all?”
“If there are any downed trees, I will move them out of your way. We can spare an hour,” he cajoled until she agreed.
“Mom, Dad, I’m going out with Dev,” Sunny called out to her parents who simply waved them off.
Devine had spoken to her father earlier and had told the male of his intentions. The Wolf was not exactly happy, but who could blame him? His daughter was a fucking gem, and she was getting him for a mate.
“Do you love her?” Leaf had asked.
“Yes, sir. I love her more than my life and I will keep her safe as long as there is breath in my body.”
“You better,” was his only reply.
Fine words from a father, and Devine looked forward to asking his advice should he and his beautiful mate be blessed with young. But, children or not, Sunny was his real surprise. She had given him more than she could ever know.
These moments with her were precious, and he was not going to waste another one. Stupid. He’d been stupid for waiting, for dragging his feet. Thank fuck, she was smarter and more patient than he was . Sunny was his all. She was his everything and he would spend his entire life being worthy of her.
She chatted as they drove to their house, parking the truck and walking towards the woods behind Castle Falk. He took her hand, making sure she did not trip or fall on the downed branches and slippery chunks of ice that dotted the landscape. He guided her to the shed the others used to hide their Change from outsiders. This area was secluded, protected, and privately owned, so the chance of having any unwanted onlookers was pretty nil. But even so, Devine had something to share. Sunny took off her clothes, not shy or embarrassed in front of him, and he thanked the gods for that.
There was nothing sexier than his mate as she prepared for her shift. She turned her head, frowning when he just stood there.
“Aren’t you going to change with me?”
“Yes, but first I wanted to tell you something.”
“Oh, I see,” she said on a laugh, and walked into his arms only in her leggings, breasts bouncing beautifully in their bareness as she moved. “You just want me naked while you talk.”
“Well, I hadn’t thought of that at first. But now that you mention it,” he replied with a wicked grin. “Seems like a great plan to me, love.”
“I bet,” she returned and nuzzled his face with hers. “Tell me already, my Wolf wants out.”
“I love you, Sunny,” he said, unable to help himself as he dropped a kiss on her open mouth.
“I love you too, Dev.”
“I know. I feel it in here, and that is why I am giving you this,” Devine said, taking the small thing out of his pocket.
He held out his handiwork, worrying over the simplicity of the design. A dozen black diamonds circled the chunk of galaxy quartz he’d pulled from the earth. He’d used Castor’s connections to set and polish the stone. To make it worthy of her.
“Dev?”
“I am new to this world, but I understand you grew up beside the humans here. I know not all supernaturals do this, but my Clan practices human tradition with so many of their mates doing so as well,” he rambled, clearing his throat. “Anyway, um, I want you to wear this, Sunny. It has been imbued with magic to stretch and shrink as you change shape. It is unbreakable and a symbol of my devotion to you, my love. Will you wear it, Sunny?”
“Oh Dev,” she whispered, tears flowing freely now.
“Will you be my mate? My bride? Can I keep you?” he whispered the last, his voice thick with emotion.
“Yes. Yes. My answer is yes,” she said, launching herself at him.
But Devine was ready. He caught her. Always would. Holding her tight to him, he crashed his mouth to hers and kissed the hell out of her. She was glorious like that. Happiness radiated from her as she clung to him, bare-breasted and moaning, inside the changing shed on the edge of the woods his Clan used, but with no one else there to witness except themselves.
Devine never believed in luck before he met her. But his Sunny was a pleasant surprise, gifted by the Fates, and claimed by him. His choice. And he would pick her again, and again. For always.
C
astle Falk was simply the most luxurious place she had ever dined in. Everything from the floor to the furniture to the glass she sipped from was expensive.
But the people, they were the real treasure and here on Thanksgiving Day, Sunny felt truly blessed. She had her family, her mate, and her new Clan around her. What could be better?
Callius and Fred sat with their two youngest children on their laps and fed them bites of the pumpkin and pecan pies Sunny’s mother had made to contribute to the meal. Sander and Noelle were laughing at something Castor said, while his mate Jozette just sighed and rocked their baby in her arms.
Edric and Joselyn were in the living room, setting up a custom set of wooden train tracks for the other children to play with while the grownups enjoyed some coffee, wine, and desserts.
Thanksgiving with Devine’s Clan had been quite the affair, but most surprising was how simple and good it felt to belong to something as wondrous as this. Crystal had dropped by, but she hadn’t stayed very long, and River was deep in discussions with Nicholas over his new job proposal. The youngest Daye was changing his life’s plans, and that was alright with Sunny, as long as he worked hard and didn’t mooch.
“He’ll work hard,” Devine whispered, dropping a lingering kiss on her cheek.
She loved when he did that—read her mind. It was just another facet of their growing matebond that she had come to love. Every day she was surprised with something new from her formerly grouchy Dragon mate, and she could not wait for what tomorrow would bring.
“Sorry everyone, I have to go,” Nicholas said, standing up and straightening the jacket of his tux.
The man was gorgeous, even after cutting his long silver-tipped hair down to just the inky dark roots. He resembled his younger brother quite a lot, but Sunny was inclined to find Dev the more handsome of the two.
“Oh, but you’ll miss meeting Minnie,” she said, and he gave her an apologetic smile.
“No worries. I’m sure I will meet your friend some other time,” he said, leaving without a backwards glance.
“Where is he off to in such a rush?” Fred asked, popping a bite of Sunny’s mom’s famous cream cheese pie crust into her mouth.
“He is looking for a mate,” Devine said and shocked everyone.
“What? How?”
“Dating apps. I believe he has lined one up for every night this month,” Devine informed them sadly.
“I wonder if the Fates work like that,” Sander remarked.
“Well, I just hope he is safe,” Sunny said, concerned for her brother-in-law.
“He is a Dragon, love. He will be fine,” Devine reassured her.
Later that night, Devine wrapped his arms around his mate, and Sunny sighed contentedly. Her body was deliciously sated, and she inhaled the heady fragrance that was her scent mingled with his.
“Feel the bond now, love? It grows stronger,” he whispered, kissing her head, making her feel cherished.
“Mm, yeah. Like our roses,” she murmured, lifting her hand to trace the mark he’d given her—his quartz rose with her fingertips.
“Have I told you how much I love you today, mate?” Devine growled, and her body heated as that rumbly sound moved through his chest and into her.
Sunny pushed her body back into his, loving the feel of his hardening shaft against her buttocks. His body was incredible, his appetite for her insatiable, and she could hardly believe this was happening. Joy like this was too precious for words.
So instead of talking, she turned her head, catching his lips and pouring all her emotions into that one breathtaking kiss. Her body quivered helplessly in response as Devine tightened his hold on her. She felt his love like a magnet, pulling her closer and holding her in the circle of his protection and his love. Their kiss went on and on, and she never wanted it to stop. Would never tire of this deep and soul-searing affection.
“I love you too,” she whispered into his mouth, loving the purr-like growl that told her his Dragon was happy.
Devine rolled her onto her back and slid between her thighs, filling her in a single thrust as he told her with his body how much he worshipped her. Pleasure spiraled and soon, Sunny was out of control, bucking wildly against her mate, trusting him to bring her to and back down again from the heaven only he could bring.
Fuck, it was good. So good. And even if times got hard and emotional, Sunny was a fixer, and Devine was a warrior. They would never give up on each other. Knowing that, trusting in that gave them both a purpose that was greater than themselves.
Many hours later, Sunny was lying on top of Devine, resting her well-loved body in the cradle of his embrace. A smile played at the corner of her lips, and she felt their matebond wrap them up tightly like a security blanket.
“I chose you too,” she murmured, giving him another chunk of her heart gladly.
“Es meus.” His Dragon growled, and Sunny’s Wolf howled inside her mind’s eye.
He’d once told her he did not like surprises, but later Devine amended that statement.
“You’re the Dragon’s surprise, Sunny Daye. The best one this beast of a man has ever gotten.”
The end.
