Mason pulled me to hide around the stairwell corner. It was the perfect blind spot. We could see everything below clearly, but no one down there could spot us.
"Richie, I'm a little scared." Elena clutched her handbag tightly, looking really nervous.
"Then forget it. I'll find someone else. No need to push yourself," Richard said. Their voices were quiet, but in the still of the night, we could hear every word.
"Will you still love me then?" Elena asked.
"Of course, baby. Don't overthink it," Richard said. They hugged tightly, staying like that for a while before pulling apart.
After they split, Elena seemed to steel herself. "No need to find someone else. I'll do it."
"You're the best, baby. I love you," Richard said.
"I love you too," Elena said.
Richard walked Elena out. We exchanged a look and hurried back to our room.
I shut the door, poured a glass of water from the pitcher, and chugged it down. That finally settled my nerves a bit.
The discovery had sobered me right up. I asked Mason, "When did Elena and Richard hook up?"
He glanced at me. "Why not ask them? They probably haven't gone far. You could still catch up."
I was speechless.
Mason could never just talk nicely. But then again, my question was pretty dumb.
Mason sat on the couch with a frown. After a minute, he said, "Be careful these next few days. Elena will come to see you."
"Huh? How do you know?" I asked.
"Richard never gets his own hands dirty when he does something bad. Did you see how Elena's hands shook when she held that bag? There's definitely something shady in there."
"I-I won't see her." A chill ran through me. I was scared.
"If she's set on hurting you, avoiding her won't fix it." He paused. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."
Oh, those words took most of my fear away right away. I didn't ask how he planned to protect me. I just felt an inexplicable sense of safety.
Looks like Helen and Richard were in a hurry. They couldn't wait to make a move on me. But the inheritance mess was over, right? Why were they still trying to get me?
I voiced the question in my mind. Mason said it was probably the comment I made that afternoon that put Helen and Richard on edge, making them want to get rid of me.
But I still didn't get it. I asked Mason, "If they're plotting to hurt me, why do it here at home instead of somewhere else?" It'd be way easier to stay hidden outside.
"Did you see Elena's face when she came out? All flushed. Obviously they'd just had sex. Richard's a total clean freak about that stuff. He won't stay in hotels or sleep with a woman who's been with someone else."
Oh, that made sense.
After all that, we didn't get to bed till two in the morning. Then bright and early, Mason was shaking me awake. "Get up. We're going to check on Grandma."
"What? We have to go check on her in the morning?" I rolled over and kept sleeping. Last night had been way too draining. I needed all the sleep I could get to recharge my fried brain.
"It's our family rule," he replied.
I shot straight up in bed, wide awake. I rushed to get up, wash up, put on makeup, and get ready to head downstairs.
Most of the Knight family rules were set by Harold. Even though he'd been gone a long time, his influence still stuck. As Mason's new wife, showing up late to check on Delilah the first time would look like I was against the rules.
No one messed with the Knight family rules. And Helen and Richard were already watching me like hawks.
If I was late, in Joey's words, I'd be toast.
