Joey'd already left me flat broke. Was she gonna drag me into a dine-and-dash next? I couldn't afford that kind of embarrassment. Even though that was what I was thinking, I couldn't say it out loud. Otherwise, Joey would've definitely flipped out.
"Let's eat at home," I said. "I told Helen we'd be back by noon."
"I'll call Mom and tell her we're eating out." Joey was always quick to act. No sooner said than done. She pulled out her phone and dialed right away. "Mom, Katherine and I are out here..."
She got halfway through her sentence before Helen cut her off with a shrill yell. "You two get back here this minute. We'll settle this when you're home."
Helen must've been so angry that she raised her voice so much that I could hear every word clearly from where I stood.
Helen hung up after yelling, and Joey looked completely confused. "Katherine, do you think Dad's got a mistress and Mom found out? That's the only reason she'd be this mad, right?"
I barely held back a laugh. "I have no idea. Let's hurry back. We'll find out once we get there." The truth was, I could pretty much guess. Helen's anger was because Joey was with me.
When we got home, I sensed something was off as soon as we walked through the front door. Coffee cups and a coffee pot lay shattered all over the floor, but no maid was around to clean them up.
Hearing the door open, Helen walked over, grabbed Joey by the ear without a word, and dragged her off.
"Mom, what are you doing? Ow, that hurts..." Joey cried out.
Then came a loud bang as the door slammed shut. I picked up the scattered shopping bags one by one and told a maid to put them all by Joey's bedroom door.
I wasn't about to go upstairs. I didn't want Helen to catch me and start accusing me of eavesdropping.
Not that it mattered. I could hear every word perfectly well from the living room.
Helen and Joey were in a heated argument. I'd never seen Helen this angry. She called Joey a traitor, a fool, saying Joey was in cahoots with an outsider to scheme against her own family.
Joey shouted even louder, firing back defiantly. "Katherine's married into our family she's family. If she's an outsider, then so are you!"
Helen and Joey went at it like cats and dogs in that room. Helen was furious because her plan to get one over on me had fallen through and Joey was just full of hurt.
I sat on the couch, munching on an apple while listening to their argument. After a while, the noise died down. Then came Joey's urgent cries. "Mom, Mom, what's wrong? Mom, you're freaking me out... Someone, help!"
I ran upstairs with a few maids. When we pushed the door open, we saw Helen lying on the floor. Joey was holding her head and shaking it hard. "Mom, wake up. You're freaking me out."
Cathy quickly stopped her. "Oh, Ms. Knight, you mustn't shake her. Put Mrs. Helen Knight down right away. Carrie, go call a doctor. Hurry.
"Ruth, open the windows. The rest of you, step back from Mrs. Helen Knight. Don't crowd around. Let the air circulate. Joanna, what are you standing there for? Go get a glass of water."
Soon the maids stopped panicking and started doing as Cathy told them. Even though no one dared to tell me what to do, I called Delilah.
After thinking for a moment, I called Mason too. A stepmother was still a mother. It wouldn't look good if Mason didn't come back.
The doctor arrived soon. By then, Helen had been lifted onto the bed. The doctor first checked her eyelids and then felt her pulse. He then said to everyone, "Mrs. Helen Knight is fine. She just fainted from getting too worked up."
Joey had been sobbing uncontrollably. When she heard the doctor say that, she stopped crying but still sniffled as she asked, "When... When will my mom wake up?"
