"Why did Helen faint suddenly?" The doctor was about to answer when Delilah's authoritative voice came from the doorway.
Everyone quickly stepped aside to make way. Delilah, Martin, and Richard had all returned.
Delilah said, "All of you go downstairs. No one is to say a word about today's incident to anyone outside. Since you all did well in helping Mrs. Helen Knight, each of you will get a 1000-dollar bonus, and Cathy gets 1500 dollars."
The maids left. Everyone knew that while it was called a bonus, it was really hush money. But whatever it was, it was better than nothing.
Only family members and the doctor remained in the room. Delilah frowned and said to me, "Why did Helen get so angry that she fainted? You two tell me what happened."
I recounted everything that had happened that morning, from going out to coming back. I told the whole truth without exaggerating. Joey nodded repeatedly beside me in agreement. "Katherine's right. That's exactly what happened."
As Joey spoke, I glanced at Richard out of the corner of my eye. Even with his best efforts to hide it, he was practically seething, barely holding back from losing his temper.
Delilah's face grew darker by the second. By the end, her face was so grim it looked like a storm was brewing. Her sharp gaze shot toward Helen on the bed. But with Helen still unconscious, there was nothing she could do.
"Doctor, can getting angry affect the baby?" Martin asked.
The doctor looked completely confused. "What baby? Your wife isn't pregnant."
The words hit like a thunderclap. Everyone was instantly shocked beyond belief.
"What did you say? Say that again. You quack. You can't even tell if someone's pregnant?" Martin flew into a rage, shouting at the doctor.
"Enough, Martin. Shut your mouth," Delilah snapped at Martin and then politely asked the doctor, "Could you please double-check, Doctor?"
But the doctor shook his head, refusing. "Mrs. Delilah Knight, I understand how you feel. But I can say for certain that Mrs. Helen Knight is not pregnant.
"If you don't believe me, you can have her checked at a hospital. I won't back down from my diagnosis. Good day."
With that, the doctor started to leave. Delilah called to me. "Kate, see the doctor out. Pay him ten times the house call fee."
"No need, Mrs. Delilah Knight. I won't say a word about this," the doctor said.
Delilah said nothing more. She just stared at Helen who was still unconscious on the bed, her brows furrowed tightly.
I accompanied the doctor all the way to the front gate. But when I offered him the 7000 dollars I'd borrowed from Cathy, he flat-out refused. In the end, he just took a few bills for the house call and left Knight Manor.
When I returned to the second floor, the door was closed. I was debating whether to knock when it opened. A maid stepped out and said, "Mrs. Katherine Knight, Mrs. Delilah Knight wants you to go back to your room and stay in for the rest of the day."
I nodded and headed back. Once I shut my bedroom door, I flopped onto the couch. I had to admit, this crazy news was a lot to process.
Helen was not pregnant? Then why was she asking for spicy and sour food now and then? Just picturing her faking a baby bump and parading around in maternity clothes cracked me up.
I couldn't hold back my laughter. It started as a giggle and turned into full-on cackling. I was rolling on the couch, kicking my legs and waving my arms.
I was over the moon, but I had to keep quiet. There were only two big suites on the third floor. Delilah was probably chewing Martin out in the study. If anyone walked by and heard me, they'd know I was gloating.
Biting my lip and pressing my hand over my mouth was torture. I felt like I was about to burst.
That was when I heard the key turn in the lock. I knew Mason was home.
