I scurried over to Mason, sweet and docile. "You're back. You must be tired," I said, taking his briefcase. "Are you thirsty? I'll make some coffee."
"Can't you keep a low profile? Calm down," Mason said.
Even though he said that, he wasn't really angry. There was even a smile on his usually icy face.
"You heard about what happened today, right? Right?" I grabbed his arm, shaking it excitedly—back to my normal self.
"Go make the coffee. I'm thirsty," Mason said.
"Got it."
He took off his coat and hung it up, then told me, "I just came from Grandma's study."
"Oh? What did Delilah say?" I perked up. My gossipy side went into overdrive, and I couldn't hold back my excitement.
Mason gave me a glare and then told me the whole story. That was when I found out what happened after they got home that day.
Helen and Martin had come back first. When Helen fainted, Martin wanted to call a doctor to the house to check on her. After all, the family owned hospitals. It would be easy.
But halfway there, Helen suddenly felt nauseous like she was going to throw up. She couldn't hold it in. They quickly stopped the car, so she could get out and vomit. She retched for ages but didn't throw up anything.
Martin patted her gently on the back from behind. He urged her to go to the hospital for a check-up. After all, the hospital had better equipment.
Just then, an old man with a beard appeared out of nowhere. He looked wise and sharp, not like a bad guy.
The old man glanced at them and then congratulated Helen and Martin. He said Helen was pregnant, congratulating them on having a child in their later years.
He even said it wasn't just a boy. It was a boy with a fate of great wealth and honor. Someday, that child would definitely make something of himself.
Helen married Martin when she was 20. She'd given birth to Richard just two months after the wedding. She was only 42 now. She wasn't that old. It was totally possible for her to get pregnant.
Martin had been half-convinced at first. But Helen secretly told him that she really hadn't gotten her period the month before. That made him fully believe the old man's words. Overjoyed, he took all the cash from his wallet and gave it to the old man as a reward.
The old man left happily, and Helen and Martin returned in high spirits too.
When Helen and Martin got back, Delilah and the others had just arrived home. So Helen and Martin announced the news of the pregnancy right away.
Delilah saw that Helen and Martin had come back later than her. She assumed they'd gone to the hospital for a check-up and were announcing the result.
She never would've guessed that this so-called pregnancy was just some random nonsense from an old man on the street.
But when Helen fainted today and the doctor said she wasn't pregnant, it reminded Delilah of asking where Helen had had the check-up that day.
That was when Martin told Delilah exactly what had happened.
Delilah never imagined the whole thing would be so absurd. She was so angry that she almost passed out.
She swept everything off the table onto the floor. But even that didn't ease her rage. She pointed at Martin and yelled at him for half an hour before letting him go.
But that wasn't all. Still fuming, Delilah told Helen and Martin to move out of Knight Manor. She didn't want to see them and get angry.
By the time Mason finished telling the whole story, my mouth was hanging open in shock.
