So many silly women lost themselves over love. There had been Madeline before, and now Elena was making the same mistake.
"Mrs. Katherine Knight, you're so talented. Oh my, everyone, come look!" Lucy Perez's shout pulled me out of my thoughts.
I looked down. I'd made a beautiful fruit platter. And I'd barely tried. If I'd put in effort, it would've been even nicer.
I had Amelia's pickiness to "thank" for getting me this good.
All the servants crowded around, going on about the platter. One said, "Wow, that's amazing. You must have ten or eight years of practice to cut like that."
Another said, "Mrs. Katherine Knight, could you teach me?"
"Me too," someone else said.
"Me too," added another.
I smiled without saying a word. The truth was, I really wanted to agree, but I didn't dare. Mason had told me to remember my place. People should act like their position demanded.
Dropping by the kitchen now and then was fine, but if I started mixing with the servants like we were the same, he'd never allow it.
"All right, that's enough of that. Mrs. Katherine Knight, Mrs. Helen Knight is waiting for you to take this over," Cathy came over to remind me.
I picked up the platter and took it to the living room. That platter left Moira really impressed too.
Moira said, "Wow, fruit can look this nice? That's amazing. Katherine, can you let me meet who made this? I want to learn from them."
Moira's big, bright eyes blinked, looking at me, full of hope.
"If you like, you can come to me anytime. It's not that hard, you'll get it right away," I said.
Moira's eyes filled with disbelief right away. "Katherine, did you make this?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I did."
I felt a little proud. It was always nice to be praised, it made me feel good inside.
"I didn't see that coming, Kate. You're full of surprises. Good." Delilah was pleased too, and even Helen had to agree, though she sounded reluctant.
Dinner time was nearly here, so I stood up to start arranging for the food to be served. But just as I got to the kitchen door, a loud banging on the door made me jump.
Along with the banging, an angry voice shouted, "Richard, open up! Open the door and explain. You bring another woman home to meet your family. What does that make me?"
I recognized the voice. It was Elena.
I turned to look at the living room. Everyone had stood up, with all sorts of expressions on their faces.
Richard and Helen looked panicked. Delilah seemed a bit angry. And Moira had a totally confused look.
"I'll go check. I'll explain later," Richard was the first to react, saying to Moira.
Then he hurried to the door in a few steps. Even as he passed me, he didn't forget to shoot me a glare.
The front door opened. I only got a look at Elena's tear-streaked face before Richard stepped outside and shut the door again.
It was obvious that serving dinner now wasn't a good idea. And going back to the living room didn't seem right either. I decided to hide in the kitchen and wait to see what would happen.
"Katherine, get over here." I'd just walked into the kitchen when Helen called out loudly.
From her tone, she was looking to pick on me.
I pretended to be obedient, stepping out of the kitchen. I put on a scared look and asked, "Helen, did you need me?"
A loud slap hit my face, and my face was burning with pain.
Helen roared, "Katherine, this is Moira's first time here. What do you mean by having your friend come to our house looking for Richie?"
