Martin and Helen stayed quiet, but their faces showed they weren't convinced. Delilah let out a cold laugh. "I wanted to save you the embarrassment, but if you don't care, I'll spell it out. No point in you two being upset.
"That girl has been coming around every night these past few days. She sneaked into Richie's room and then left in the middle of the night or early morning. You thought I didn't know it?
"I refuse to believe you two had no idea of it. Helen, as the lady of the house, the servants must've told you. Yet you stood there, putting down Mase's wife, throwing dirt on her name. Did you think I was blind?
"A man having a few flings isn't the end of the world, but blaming someone else for what he's done is wrong. Five years ago... Never mind, let's leave the past alone. You two are getting divorced tomorrow. This kind of thing will never happen again."
I bowed my head as far as I could, scared they'd see me smiling. All the hurt I'd felt just vanished. In my head, I cheered for Delilah. Way to go, Delilah!
"Delilah, I know I was wrong. Please don't make me get a divorce. I'll never do it again. I'll apologize to Kate, right now." As Helen spoke, she began to sob so bitterly that I almost felt bad for her.
"Kate, I'm sorry. I apologize to you. Please ask Delilah to let me off." Helen even bowed to me as she said this.
My head went fuzzy. Wasn't Helen making me look like a bad guy? Honestly.
I didn't ask Delilah for mercy. Instead, I also bowed to Helen as I said, "Helen, you can't bow to me. You did nothing wrong. You were just being a good mother, wanting to protect Richie. Delilah won't really stay mad at you.
"I'm the younger one. You hit me, but it's fine. Even if you wronged me, I won't hold it against you."
"What's going on here?" Joey's voice came from the doorway. I turned to see her, Mason, and Richard had all come back.
When Helen saw Richard, it was like she'd found someone to lean on. She ran over, sobbing, "Richie, Delilah's throwing me out of the house."
Once Helen ran over, I stood next to Mason, silently watching her put on her show.
Richard didn't even get a chance to speak before Joey blew up. She stormed over to Delilah and yelled, "Why toss Mom out? If you're kicking someone, kick us all out.
"Then you can be here all by yourself. You boss everyone around like we actually want to stay in this house."
After that, Joey grabbed Helen's arm. "Let's go. We're not sticking around to get pushed around."
Livid, Helen smacked Joey's face. "Zip it. Not another word."
"I'm defending you, and you hit me? Seriously, are you my mom?" Joey shot back.
"Joey, cut it out." Richard's command worked like magic. Joey clammed up right away.
Richard stepped forward. "Grandma, this is all on me. Do whatever you want to me, but please don't punish Mom. If they get divorced, Moira's parents might think something's wrong."
That single sentence did more than all of Helen's begging and tantrums combined.
To Delilah, family benefits mattered most. Breaking up Helen and Martin would definitely complicate Richard's marriage.
"Send that woman overseas. Make sure she never sets foot here again," Delilah said, dropping the divorce talk and changing the subject.
Everyone but Joey knew this was Delilah's way of giving in.
"Which woman?" Joey elbowed me and asked.
"Elena," Delilah replied.
"So she really is involved with Richie? I thought she was just trying to mess with me." Joey's words dropped like a bomb, and every eye in the room landed on her.
Delilah's stare turned ice-cold. "Explain. Now."
