"Yes," I answered briefly.
"Good. I believe in you." After saying that, he closed his eyes and started to rest. I focused on memorizing the contents of the papers.
I'd had an unusually good memory since I was a kid. I wouldn't say I could memorize everything at a glance, but as long as I read it twice carefully, it stuck.
The company I was going to was the same one my ex-husband, Oliver, worked at. But my new position was the Deputy General Manager—Oliver's direct superior.
Back then, Oliver had worked tirelessly to secure a place for himself in the company, fighting tooth and nail to carve out a spot.
Yet Mason effortlessly made me the Deputy General Manager. I wasn't interested in how he managed that. What interested me now was how I could make Oliver, that scumbag, suffer and repay him a thousandfold for everything he did to me.
Most of the documents were filled with the positions and relationships of the company's senior management. Oliver's name was prominently listed, and his position had even been promoted one level higher over the last three months.
I had heard Oliver mention most of the people listed, so after just a quick glance, I put the papers down.
Noticing that I put them aside, Mason opened his eyes. "Got it all memorized?"
"Yeah." I nodded.
"Okay. Good luck," Mason said.
As we spoke, the plane had begun its descent. After we landed, a black Bentley was already waiting on the tarmac.
Mason didn't get off the plane, and I stepped out. The driver of the Bentley rushed over to me, greeting politely, "Good day, Ms. Gordon. I'm here to take you back to the company. Mr. Xander Anderson, the General Manager, sent me."
"Thank you. I appreciate that." My words were polite, but my attitude was distant, keeping people at arm's length.
"No worries, ma'am. You've had a long journey. We're the ones who should thank you for coming." The driver opened the car door for me, his hand in a pristine white glove resting above the frame.
Once I sat inside, he quickly returned to the driver's seat, started the engine, and drove toward the company.
When the car was still some distance from the company, I could already see a crowd of people standing at the main entrance, lined up neatly in two rows.
Above the company's front gate was a huge banner that read, "A Warm Welcome to Deputy General Manager Katherine Gordon on Her Appointment to the Company."
Not only that, but to the right of the gate, a group of musicians was setting up.
Before the car had even come to a stop, the musicians began playing a cheerful tune, and General Manager Xander Anderson himself walked over to open the car door for me.
I chuckled, "I'm your subordinate. How could I possibly let you open the door for me?"
Xander smiled back, "Oh, please, Ms. Gordon, don't say that. It's an honor to have you as our Deputy General Manager. Opening the door for you is nothing."
Xander and I exchanged pleasantries, but we both knew what was going on in our heads. It was our first time meeting, yet we both acted as if we were old friends.
While chatting with Xander, I casually scanned the crowd. I spotted Oliver standing on the outskirts, trying desperately to inch his way closer.
I couldn't help but scoff to myself. He was still the same old Oliver. If there was an opportunity to show off in front of his superiors, he would never miss it.
I was certain he was going to cause some kind of trouble today, trying to earn my favor.
