Even though Delilah had told Helen to go back to her parents' place yesterday, Delilah didn't say a word with Moira there.
Helen got all the servants in the house to wait on Moira hand and foot. Moira, seeing how much Helen was fawning over her, looked pleased.
It was nearly lunchtime when Joey, who'd slept till midday, finally wandered into the living room. Joey and Moira had hit it off, so Joey was glad to see her again.
But Joey had a quirk. When she was happy, she got cocky, and when she got cocky, something always went wrong.
Joey took Moira's hand, all chummy, and said, "Moira, if you marry Richie, you've got to keep an eye on him. Don't let him mess around with Elena anymore."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Delilah and Helen wanted to clamp a hand over her lips.
But with Moira there, they couldn't very well tell Joey to shut up. So Helen started signaling to Joey, trying to get her to stop.
The trouble was, Helen and Joey had no real connection. Joey didn't get it, but Moira did.
Moira was straightforward—naive and sweet, but not stupid.
Her face turned cold right away. "Mrs. Helen Knight, what's that supposed to mean? Are you keeping something from me?"
"No, of course not. Moira, don't listen to Joey's nonsense. Elena and Richie have nothing going on," Helen said.
It would've been better if she hadn't said anything. Her explanation only made things worse.
Moira shot up from the couch. "Excuse me, I'm not feeling well. I'm going home."
Helen panicked. She reached out to stop her. "Moira, don't go. You have to stay."
"Why should I? You gonna lock me up? That's ridiculous," Moira snapped, trying to push her hand away.
Helen, flustered, did something dumb. She yelled at Joey, "Joey, grab Moira. Don't let her run off."
Really? Moira's face flushed with anger. Even Joey, flaky as she was, could see Helen was being ridiculous.
Delilah snapped, "Stop it. Helen, if you're feverish and muddled, go rest. Stay out of this."
Then Delilah turned, took Moira's hand, and said, "Honey, don't take it amiss. Helen just cares about you too much. She's afraid you might understand Richie."
Moira's face softened a bit, but she still meant to leave.
By then Helen had come to her senses and didn't dare stop Moira. Helen hung back awkwardly, following to see her out. The door had just opened when they saw Elena outside.
Elena fixed her stare on Moira. "So you're the one trying to steal Richie from me? You shameless homewrecker."
"I'm not a homewrecker. I'm Richie's girlfriend," Moira said, eyeing Elena dubiously.
Elena's intense, unblinking gaze seemed off, which only proved what Delilah had said the day before.
"You're lying. I'm Richie's girlfriend. You're the shameless homewrecker. Heh. Please, give Richie back to me. I'll do anything if he comes back to me," Elena said.
Elena's erratic manner stirred sympathy in Moira. Moira stepped forward to take Elena's hand, trying to calm her down.
But Helen got the wrong idea, thinking they were going to fight. She jumped in, saying, "Moira, don't get your hands dirty. Let me teach her a lesson." And with that, she slapped Elena hard.
If Helen had kept quiet, Delilah could have smoothed things over. But unfortunately, there was more than one clumsy ally around.
"Elena, you even dare show up here? You shameless woman. I'll tear you apart!" Joey shouted, lunging at Elena.
"Get off me. Where's Richie? I need to see Richie," Elena said.
Helen and Joey ganged up on Elena, leaving Moira standing there, too shocked to speak.
But Helen misread it, thinking Moira was pleased. So Helen went even further. "Bitch, I'll never let you marry Richie. He's already engaged to someone a thousand times better than you."
Moira's face fell at once. Delilah's lie from yesterday was exposed, and no explanation would fix it now.
The three women tussled, and Elena somehow held her own at first. Then the servants joined in, ganging up on Elena. Soon enough, they had her on the ground.
Moira only said to Delilah, "Mrs. Delilah Knight, your family sure has great manners." With that, she drove off. Delilah didn't try to stop her. There was no point anyway.
Helen wanted to stop Moira, but she couldn't let go.
Helen was fuming. She blamed everything on Elena, hitting and grabbing at her even more wildly, forgetting they were right at the doorway, out in the open.
Just then, Mason saw what was happening outside through the window and hurried down.
Luckily, it was noon and there weren't many people around. But every servant in and around Knight Manor had seen it. Servants talked, and the neighborhood was full of rich, important people. If word got around, it wouldn't look good for the Knight family.
When Delilah saw Mason coming, she told him to handle things outside. Then she took Helen and Joey to the study. No one knew what was said there.
Jack rushed back from outside. He was shocked to find Elena at Knight Manor. Mason asked him what was going on.
Jack said that while he was doing paperwork at the mental hospital, Elena had snuck away.
The bodyguards had searched everywhere but couldn't find her. No one had expected she'd make her way to Knight Manor.
After telling Jack to take Elena away, Mason gathered all the servants. He ordered them not to say a word about what had happened. If word got out and made the Knight family a joke, he would fire every last one of them.
The servants agreed and went back to work. But within an hour, the drama was all over the internet.
Mason was furious. No one admitted to leaking it, though. So he paid everyone their wages and fired them all.
At this point, I was confused. I asked Esther, "Then why can you stay?"
"I don't have a phone like yours. And I don't know how to use the internet," Esther replied.
I had nothing to say. So that was how it was.
But I still wondered. "Even if all the servants were fired, where did the family go?"
Esther answered, "Ms. Duke got hurt in a car crash and went to the hospital. The Honorable Mr. Knight called to let everyone know. So they all went to the hospital."
"I see." Now that the whole story was told, I finally knew why the house was empty.
The "Honorable Mr. Knight" Esther spoke of was Edward.
Edward was a government official. Out of respect, the household servants called him "the Honorable Mr. Knight."
I glanced at my watch. It was already 8 p.m.
According to Esther, they had left at 2 p.m. That meant Moira must be seriously hurt. Otherwise, they would have been back long before.
I worried about Moira and about Elena too. Both were such nice girls. But they had been ruined by the same scumbag.
I silently thought they deserved better. I forgot all about myself.
