I got another bowl, scooped two bowls of flour, cracked in some eggs, and mixed them into a batter. I put a little oil in a pan, fried up chopped onions and garlic until they smelled good, and then added ketchup and cooked it until thick.
I rolled out the risen dough into a round, thin crust. Then I had Esther spread the sauce, sprinkle a layer of cheese, add the toppings, and cover it with another layer of cheese. After putting it in the oven for 20 minutes, the pizza was ready.
"Mrs. Knight, you're good enough to open a restaurant. It smells amazing. I wish I could make pizza that smells this good," Esther said, sniffing and closing her eyes, lost in the smell.
"Serve it. You're waiting for me to do it?" I said.
"Oh, right." Esther snapped out of it, put the pizza on a tray, and carried it out.
As soon as we came out, Joey followed her nose over. "What is that? Smells great."
No one else reacted, so I didn't want to brag. "Homemade pizza."
"You made this?" Joey asked.
"Yeah," I mumbled, setting it on the table.
It was simple. I just put some ingredients from the fridge on the pizza. I guess everyone was hungry. They finished it up quickly. I didn't ask if they wanted more. There was no pizza left anyway.
After the meal, Delilah finally spoke. "Everyone go rest. We'll have a family meeting tomorrow morning." Her tone was all business, firm, and strict.
No one said a word against it. We all went back to our rooms.
As soon as I closed the door, I couldn't wait to ask Mason, "What happened this afternoon? Why didn't you wake me?"
He gave me an annoyed look. "What's with that nosy face? Right now, we're in this together. Your interests are tied to this family's."
"I'm just concerned, that's all. How's Moira and... you know, the other one?" I asked.
"They're fine."
I fell silent.
Yeah, right, like I'd believe that. I could believe Elena was okay. Mason kept his promises. He wouldn't let Jack hurt her.
But if Moira was fine, why did they come back so late?
Mason kept staring at me. He could tell exactly what I was thinking. "Esther told you everything, didn't she?"
"Yeah." I nodded. Then I shook my head quickly. "Not really. She didn't tell me on her own. I tricked it out of her."
Mason didn't go on about that. Instead, he started telling me what happened after they left.
It turned out, after getting Edward's call, they rushed to the hospital. On the way, they called Martin and Richard, telling them to come too.
Everyone got to the hospital around the same time. When they reached the ward, Edward and Grace were already there.
There was also a middle-aged couple—about Edward's age, with a similar sort of presence. They looked like officials right away, and Moira looked a lot like the woman.
Everyone could tell they were Moira's parents. Helen hurried over to chat them up, but they barely paid her any attention.
Helen stepped back, looking awkward. Joey was about to stick up for Helen when Martin pulled her outside.
The rest were young folks, with nothing to say to Moira's parents. So Delilah had to take charge. She apologized first and then asked how Moira was doing.
When Delilah spoke, Moira called from the inner room, "Mrs. Delilah Knight? Is that you?"
Her voice sounded clear, not like she was hurt. Everyone felt a little relieved. With Moira's parents' okay, only Delilah went in. The others stayed outside.
No one outside knew what Delilah and Moira talked about, but then trouble started up out there.
