Edward pulled Martin and Richard aside and passed on what Moira's parents had said. "I called you all here today to make it clear. Richie, don't contact Moira anymore."
Edward didn't try to keep his voice down, so everyone heard. Martin had no idea what to do or say. He looked at Richard, indicating it was his turn to answer.
But before Richard could speak, Helen panicked.
Moira was her only hope of staying in the Knight family. She wasn't about to let that go. So she threw all dignity aside and went to beg Moira's parents.
Helen poured out endless sweet talk, made all sorts of promises, and even swore oaths. Helen promised to make sure Moira lived happily if she married into the Knight family.
Helen's tone was humble, her attitude sincere. She was practically begging Moira's parents to let Moira marry Richard.
Everyone there was shocked.
Moira's parents, in particular, kept up polite words. "Even if we can't be in-laws, we can still be friends." But the look of disdain in their eyes was plain to see.
They were both sharp, experienced people. How could they be fooled by a few nice words?
Helen's eagerness only made Moira's parents more alert. They felt even more sure the Knight family was a trap. They couldn't let Moira step into it.
Edward was embarrassed. He signaled Martin to pull Helen back and stop making a fool of herself in front of his colleagues. But Martin didn't think Helen was doing anything wrong. He looked hopeful, waiting for Moira's parents to change their minds.
Richard's face went red, then white. Trying to stop Helen from talking did no good. In the end, he and Joey had to drag their troublesome mother out. Only then did the ward quiet down.
Joey did well. She didn't join Helen in making a scene.
Things had gone this far, and Greg had a really bad impression of Martin and Helen. Since he'd said what needed to be said, Greg politely asked everyone to leave.
But just then, Delilah helped Moira out. And Moira said right to their faces she wouldn't break up with Richard. She wanted to give him another chance.
Greg and his wife, Sharon Duke, were so angry that their faces turned livid, but they kept their cool. They politely asked everyone to leave again, completely ignoring what Moira had said.
Helen, who'd been hopeless, perked right up when she saw Moira had changed her mind. Everyone had already walked out of the ward when, out of nowhere, she slipped back in.
Helen grabbed Moira's arm tightly, fussing over her with endless concern and fawning over her with all kinds of nice words. Then Helen insisted she say it again.
Moira, scared of Helen's wild behavior, tried to pull away. She didn't notice and stepped on her right slipper with her left foot, crashing straight into the doorframe.
If Helen had caught her then, it would've been fine. But Helen pulled her hand back fast, holding it high over her head like she wanted to show she had nothing to do with it.
Everyone outside saw it clearly, but by the time they ran over to catch Moira, it was too late. They just had to watch as Moira hit the doorframe hard.
Moira was dazed for ages, all mixed up from the fall. Even Sharon, who'd stayed calm, couldn't take it anymore. She yelled at everyone to get out.
Delilah, who'd finally talked Moira around, saw all that work go to waste. Delilah told Martin right then to send Helen back to her family's house, saying she'd disown him if he even tried to argue.
Helen tried to beg, but Richard and Martin dragged her away.
With that no-good Helen gone, the others stayed outside the ward, waiting for the doctor to come out.
