My mom nodded again and again, then turned to George. "Go get two cups of juice. Don't treat our guests poorly. They saved me."
"Got it," George said and left the room.
The moment the door closed, my mom's hand trembled as she gently touched my cheek. "What a beautiful girl. You're so pretty."
As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes and spilled onto my hand, warm and real. My throat tightened. I fought hard to keep my own tears from falling.
My mom continued, "Sometimes one has to learn the hard way. As long as they're still alive, there's nothing they can't get through."
If I had even a shred of doubt before, now I was a hundred percent sure—my mom had figured out who I was. I just didn't know whether she'd guessed it on her own or if Mason had told her.
But either way, seeing her safe and sound lifted a weight off my shoulders. I had nothing left to worry about.
Before George could come back with the juice, I pulled Mason with me and said goodbye. As long as my mom and I both knew we were both safe, there was no need to linger.
The moment I stepped out of the hospital, I felt light like a huge stone had been lifted from my chest. Everything looked good. The sky was blue, the clouds were white, even the patients and their families walking past looked cheerful to me.
But my joy didn't last long before someone showed up to ruin it. A cab pulled up not far from where we were. Amelia was helping Jennifer out of the car.
Talk about bad timing. I hadn't even had the chance to pick a fight and they'd already shown up in front of me.
Jennifer was holding her belly with both hands, her face pale and twisted in pain.
Meanwhile, Amelia looked frantic, but that didn't stop her from nagging as they walked.
She complained, "Young people these days are so fragile. You got a little upset and already started bleeding? When I was pregnant with Olly, I was still working like normal right up until labor."
The moment Amelia saw me standing there, she instantly switched gears. "Oh, Ms. Gordon, what brings you to the hospital? Are you not feeling well?" She dropped Jennifer and rushed over to greet me, all eager and full of flattery.
Oliver and his mother were equally disgusting. Still, even though this old hag was annoying, I knew who my real target was. I was only going after Oliver.
I shot Amelia a cold glance and was about to leave with Mason when Jennifer suddenly cried out and dropped to the ground, saying, "Ms. Gordon, I know I upset you, but you didn't have to push me. M-my belly really hurts."
Was Jennifer seriously trying to frame me? And so blatantly, too? This was ridiculous. We weren't even that close, come on.
Then Amelia dropped to the ground too, wailing and sobbing like her life depended on it, "Oh no. What do we do now? Ordinary people like us can't do anything but get pushed around by the rich."
Soon enough, a crowd started to gather around us, more and more people stopping to watch.
I got it now. At lunch, Oliver had said he'd try to pull together the money. Jennifer must've found out and got worked up over it, which brought on the cramps. When she came to the hospital, she just happened to run into me.
Maybe they were hoping to frame me, thinking if they made a scene, they wouldn't have to pay for the medical bills or the clothes, and we'd be even?
Honestly, that would've been a pretty clever trick—too bad they pulled it on the wrong person.
"I'm giving you fifteen minutes. Wrap it up clean," Mason said as he turned and got back in the car.
The bodyguard walked over and whispered in my ear, "Mr. Knight said to let you know this area has security cameras."
I gave the bodyguard a quick instruction. He nodded and walked off. I stayed right where I was, ready to enjoy the little show Jennifer and Amelia were putting on.
