Jennifer cried like her world was ending, yet somehow managed to clearly explain how I had "hit" her. Meanwhile, Amelia stood beside her, rambling on about how I made things difficult for her son Oliver at work.
The two of them were so in sync that it was almost impressive. With acting skills like that, it was a waste they weren't on a TV drama.
No wonder people say birds of a feather flock together. Jennifer really did seem like one of the Cookes.
After a while, the bodyguard came back and gave me a nod. With that, I knew exactly how to play it. I cut off Jennifer and Amelia mid-performance and spoke, "So, how do you want to settle this?"
They instantly stopped crying. Amelia scrambled up from the ground, not even bothering to dust off her clothes. "We're not trying to scam you. Let's write up an agreement saying we won't press charges against each other."
I scoffed, "Didn't you say I hit your daughter-in-law? Why would we both drop it? That doesn't make sense."
Amelia, desperate to avoid paying anything, didn't catch on that I was setting a trap. Just as I expected, she walked right into it.
"You paid the hospital bill yesterday, so let's just call it even. And as for the clothes, we'll consider that covered too," Amelia said.
"And why would I do that?" I sneered, then turned to the onlookers. "Yesterday her son pushed down his ex-mother-in-law and left her there. I was the one who kindly took her to the hospital, and now he doesn't want to pay the medical bill.
"And today, he sent his mom and mistress here to frame me? Tell me, does that sound right to any of you?"
All at once, the crowd around us buzzed. People started whispering and murmuring, everyone chiming in with their own opinions.
Jennifer was so angry that she jumped up from the ground and pointed a finger in my face. "You're lying."
I didn't back down, staring her down with a cold snort. "We'll see who's lying. The truth won't stay buried for long."
Right then, a car horn blared in the distance. I knew Mason was getting impatient, telling me to stop wasting time.
I gave the bodyguard a signal. He made a quick call, then addressed the crowd. "Everyone, please look at the surveillance footage."
He pointed toward the hospital building. Everyone turned to see a huge screen lighting up, showing the moment in question.
Clear as day, it showed I had been standing more than six feet away from Jennifer. Yet somehow, she still managed to slowly crumple to the ground.
The crowd burst into laughter. I turned around and left with the bodyguard. Once I got in the car, I gave Mason a thumbs-up. "Impressive. How did you know there were security cameras in front of the hospital?"
"Anyone with working eyes would know," he sneered.
It was always like this. Every time I genuinely wanted to praise Mason, he had a way of making me shut up.
But I was in a good mood today, so I let it slide. I still asked, "Can just anyone access the hospital's surveillance?"
Mason said, "The Knight family owns ninety percent of the hospital's shares."
I shut up. So much for having a normal conversation. I could only complain inwardly. Was there anything his family didn't own? What was next, buying the moon?
Instead of heading back to the office, Mason told the driver to take us straight home from the hospital.
When we got there, the housekeeper had already prepared dinner. Since I was in such a good mood, I suggested, "How about a drink?"
"Nadia, would you mind bringing a bottle of red wine? Thank you," Mason said to the housekeeper.
"Yes, sir," Nadia Scott replied with a nod.
As she left to get the wine, I looked at Mason curiously. "Why are you so polite to her? That's not how you were back on the island."
