The man's deep gaze fixed on me, his tone still calm. "I can help you get your revenge, but it'll come at a cost. What do you think?"
"Okay," I answered without hesitation.
He raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you going to ask what the cost is? I don't like making deals with people who back out." Maybe my answer was too quick, and he thought I was acting impulsively.
I replied, "I've already died once. The greatest cost would just be dying again. If I'm not afraid of death, what's there that I can't handle?"
The man gave me a thumbs-up, his eyes softening with approval. "Now that's the right attitude for revenge. Let's make a deal. I'll help you get your revenge, and you'll marry me."
I was stunned, my mouth hanging open, and it took a long while before I could close it. What happened to the cost?
From his clothes, speech, and the yacht's luxury, it was clear that this man was wealthy.
A man like him must have women throwing themselves at him, so why would he ask me to marry him as the cost? This deal was obviously in my favor.
I mumbled, "I'm a married woman. I'm not worthy of you." He saved my life, and I couldn't take advantage of him.
The man smirked, a look of disdain on his face. "You're overthinking it. What I need is a woman who can help me deal with my problems, not a lover."
With that, he leaned forward and slowly began outlining a detailed and well-thought-out plan for revenge. Even though I had prepared myself for the worst, the man's plan still took me by surprise.
"So, what do you think? It's not too late to back out," he said, his eyes narrowing slightly.
I answered, "I never go back on my word. I'll do everything you said."
"Okay." The man pulled out an envelope from a small drawer under the desk and took out a stack of papers, handing them to me. "If everything looks good, just sign."
The contents were similar to what he had just mentioned, but the paper had a yellowish tint, indicating it had been printed a while ago.
He had clearly prepared this in advance. It dawned on me that perhaps from the moment he saved me, this man had already planned it.
It was as if he knew exactly what I was thinking, and he spoke frankly, "I've been looking for a partner, but I haven't found the right person.
"Last night, while I was diving, I happened to overhear a conversation between a man and a woman, and then you were thrown overboard. I felt like you might be the one I was looking for, and you didn't disappoint."
No wonder he seemed to know so much about what happened to me, yet twisted everything when he talked. It turned out he'd been hiding under Oliver's boat, eavesdropping on their conversation.
Without saying anything, I picked up the pen and quickly signed my name on the contract. Then the man wrote his name—Mason Knight—in bold, flowing handwriting.
The contract was made in two copies—one handed to me, the other carefully put away by Mason. Then he reached out his hand, a wide smile on his face. "Pleasure doing business with you."
So he did know how to smile. But I couldn't bring myself to do the same. The words scraped out of my mouth, stiff and forced. "Pleasure doing business with you."
My cold fingers brushed against Mason's broad palm in a quick handshake before I pulled away as fast as I could.
Mason was incredibly calculating, deeply strategic. A feeling of having just escaped from one trap only to fall into another grew stronger by the second.
But soon, I found some peace. I had already hit rock bottom—could it really get any worse? Later, I learned it could.
According to the first step of the contract, I would have to undergo plastic surgery and completely change my appearance. Not only that, but my identity would also become that of another woman.
Mason first called a man and arranged the time for the surgery. Then, he took out some bread and cookies, and we quickly ate to satisfy our hunger.
Afterward, Mason told me to rest in the bedroom, while he went to the cockpit to steer the yacht toward our destination overnight.
