"Hey, this is my room. Ever heard of knocking? Where are your basic manners?" I retorted.
I was so mad I stomped my foot, and my towel slipped.
I scrambled to catch it, clutching it tightly to my chest, only to realize he wasn't even looking at me. He was already digging into the food like I wasn't even there.
Just then, my stomach let out a loud growl. Only then did I realize I hadn't eaten dinner.
"Fine. I'll be the bigger person and let it go," I muttered, giving myself an excuse to eat. I sat down across from him and started eating without another word.
I ended up finishing an entire bowl of pasta on my own. Once I was full, I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and finally fell into bed, melting into the sheets in sheer relief.
The moment my head hit the pillow, I fell asleep. In my dream, I found myself standing by a riverbank, surrounded on all sides by tall, feathery reeds.
I walked deeper into the thicket, only to realize I was lost. The fluffy reed plumes brushed against my face and body, tickling me with every step.
"Achoo!" I sneezed and woke up—right into a close-up of someone's face hovering above mine.
Without thinking, I kicked out. But before I could land a hit, a strong hand caught my leg. "Fast reflexes," Mason said, his voice low.
I recognized his voice instantly.
"Why are you still in my room?" I tugged the blanket higher, trying to hide my boobs.
In the darkness, his gaze gleamed with that familiar intensity. "I just remembered something I forgot to say."
I replied, "Yeah?"
He grinned, "My hormones have been running wild these days."
When I woke up the next morning, he was already gone. The man whose hormones had been thoroughly relieved had left satisfied and quiet—leaving behind a small box on the nightstand: emergency contraception.
Through clenched teeth, I spat out, "That bastard."
It turned out that men were all selfish.
They only cared about their own pleasure. When the fun was over, they wanted to kill off every potential problem. They never cared what kind of toll that little pill would take on a woman's body.
Thankfully, I couldn't get pregnant, so I didn't need to take it. I'd heard how harmful emergency contraception could be, and that one shouldn't take it more than three times a year.
And to think—I'd actually believed his bullshit. He even made me feel guilty, accused me of only thinking of myself. As if he were any different.
With a scowl, I tossed the pillbox straight into the trash. But just as it hit the bottom, something dawned on me. My period was over ten days late.
My cycles had always been clockwork, never early, never late. So what the hell was going on now? Could I be... pregnant?
Amelia used to mock me and call me barren. I'd believed it too. But Jennifer's baby wasn't Oliver's either, which meant maybe the real barren one wasn't me. Maybe it was Oliver.
My heart pounding, I rushed out to buy pregnancy tests. I got ten just to be sure. When I got home, I took every single one of them, and all showed positive.
I stood there, staring at the results, utterly numb. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The baby couldn't have come at a worse time.
I wasn't ready, not emotionally, not mentally. The baby's arrival had thrown me completely off balance. Should I keep it or not? One thing was certain—the child wouldn't be welcomed by his father.
Mason and I were just allies bound by a contract. Once the deal ended, we'd go our separate ways.
