I could tell he was really angry. No matter how curious I was, I didn't dare ask more. Well, I could just ask when we got back.
"Shall we go now?" I looked eager to leave.
"Aren't we going to eat?"
"No. Eating at home will be the same." I was already dying to get back.
When we got to Knight Manor, I knew something was off as soon as we walked into the yard. All the nice flowers and plants had been pulled up. There was just bare ground left.
Confused, I stepped forward and rang the doorbell. A servant opened the door. But there was none of the expected happiness on her face. Her expression was really odd.
"Is that Kate back?" Helen's voice called.
"Yes, Mrs. Helen Knight. Mr. Mason Knight and Mrs. Katherine Knight are back," the servant replied.
"Oh, Mase is back too? That's a surprise," Helen said as she walked over. If I hadn't seen Mason's icy face, I would have laughed out loud.
Helen had only found out she was pregnant yesterday. Now she was already in maternity clothes. That was way too much. It wasn't her first child. I wondered why Helen was dressed like that.
I held back a laugh. "Helen, congratulations to you and Martin."
"See, Kate knows how to talk. Mase, why aren't you congratulating me?" Helen said.
"She can speak for both of us. Now we've said our congratulations. If there's nothing else, I'll head back to the office." Mason started to leave but Delilah called out, "Mase, we didn't finish the family dinner yesterday. Let's make it up today. Stay for dinner before you go."
Delilah, Martin, Richard, and Joey were all sitting in the living room. But each had a different look on their face.
Delilah and Martin looked happy. Richard's face showed no change at all.
Mason's sister, Joey, had an angry scowl, looking really upset. "What's there to congratulate? Getting pregnant at her age is just embarrassing."
"Joey, how can you say that? Having children is always a blessing. Apologize to your mother right now," Delilah ordered.
"I'm not apologizing. Hmph." Joey stomped up the stairs and slammed her door with a loud bang.
Martin was furious. He shouted up, "Lock yourself in your room and never come out if you're that way."
"Fine, I won't," Joey shot back.
I was just watching the scene when Helen told me, "Kate, go talk to Joey."
She asked me to do that at that moment? Was she using me as a scapegoat?
But before I could say anything, Mason refused for me. "If you want to talk to her, go yourself. Don't use us as a shield."
"Mase, even though I'm your stepmother, I'm still your elder. Is that any way to speak to me?" Helen was acting completely differently, sounding really arrogant.
She put her hands on her hips, stuck out her not-yet-showing belly, and stood in front of us, looking all proud and rebuking us.
Delilah, who usually seemed so authoritative with Helen, didn't get angry. Instead, she spoke nicely. "Helen, sit down and rest. I'll go talk to Joey later."
"All right, I will," Helen said.
Helen sat down next to me and said, "Kate, rub my legs. They're really sore."
I was a bit stuck, but Delilah didn't look like she was going to object. And I had no reason to say no, so I started rubbing her legs now and then, with no real rhythm.
"Too light," Helen said.
I put more force into it.
But then Helen said, "Ow, that's too hard. Why are you pressing so hard?"
I knew she was picking on me, but I wasn't about to be a doormat. "Helen, I'm not a pro. I don't know how hard to go. It would be terrible if I hurt your belly."
That worked right away. Helen quickly brushed my hand off. "Stop rubbing. Go get me some grapes—sour ones. As a pregnant woman, I just really crave sour things."
"Cathy, Helen wants some sour grapes," I said.
