"I know you like lattes, but cappuccino might be better right now. I'll make you a cup of cappuccino," I said.
Delilah cut me off suddenly. "Kate, why can't you put even half the care you give me into Helen?"
My hands paused. Then I answered honestly, "She isn't as kind to me as you are."
I knew saying that was a big risk. Delilah cared a lot about rules and good manners. Even though it was modern times, no one in this house dared to speak badly of an elder out loud.
Except Mason. He could do whatever he wanted in this house.
But I was different. If Delilah took a dislike to me, even Mason's protection in the Knight family would only go so far.
But I had to take the chance. I was betting on my honesty to make her soft.
When I finished speaking, Delilah's face changed. She stayed quiet for a long moment. I wasn't the only one on edge. Mason looked tense too.
Finally, Delilah sighed. She didn't get angry or scold me. "I know you've been wronged, Kate. But Helen's pregnant now. Try to go along with her more, will you?
"Just do it for my sake. Our family never had many members. A new baby's always a good thing. It's just... you have to put up with it."
I said, "Delilah, please don't say that. I'm not wronged. I'll do whatever you say. Just tell me what to do."
My voice started to catch. Delilah had ruled the business world for decades, and now she was talking to me, a younger family member, in such a gentle, almost asking tone. I felt really uneasy about it.
Delilah said, "Good girl. I won't let you suffer for nothing." She held out a file folder. "Here, take this."
I looked at her, confused. "What is it?"
She said, "Open it and see."
I unfastened the folder and pulled out a document. It was a share transfer agreement. I looked at Delilah, and she smiled and nodded. "It's for you."
I quickly pushed the contract back into her hands. "Delilah, I can't take this. Please, take it back."
Delilah let out a hearty laugh and then pushed the contract back to me. "Once I give something away, I never take it back. Just take it."
"You said you'd do whatever I asked," she went on. "Don't go back on your word now. It's ten percent of the hospital's shares, not all of them."
If I refused now, it would look like I thought it was too little and was being ungrateful. The Knight family's hospitals had chains all over the country. You could say they made money hand over fist every day.
Even ten percent of shares was easily over 100 million dollars.
I hesitated, glancing at Mason. When he nodded, I took it and said, "Thank you, Delilah."
Delilah took my hand and then slid a bright green emerald bracelet off her wrist and onto mine.
I'd accepted the first gift, thinking I could give it back to Mason later. But this bracelet—I just couldn't take it, no way.
I might not have seen it firsthand, but I knew how it worked. I'd seen it a lot on TV. When elders gave such valuable jewelry, it was usually a family heirloom.
If I were the wife Mason had married for love, I'd happily take Delilah's gift. But I was not.
What if he found his real love someday? Should she have to wear a bracelet that a fake like me had already worn? Besides, it was way too precious. What if I accidentally broke it?
