When Maliyah woke up and saw me sitting in the living room, her eyes revealed a hint of surprise.
"Laurel, didn't you leave?" asked Maliyah.
I smiled and walked over to Maliyah. I gently ruffled her hair and said, "I went to the hospital and came back."
"Is Aunt Yvette okay?" Maliyah asked softly.
I nodded. "Are you hungry? Let's go and get something to eat."
Maliyah rubbed her head and looked at the sky outside the window. "Have I slept for a long time?"
"Four hours. It's not that long."
Maliyah lowered her head and remained silent before slowly saying, "I'm exhausted."
I took Maliyah to the dining room downstairs.
While eating, Maliyah was still eating slowly and carefully although she was starving.
"Laurel, you don't need to accompany me." She slowly raised her head and looked at me. A bitter smile appeared on her lips. "Don't worry. I don't have the guts to die. Besides, I can't bear to part with such delicious food and you guys."
"Well, eat more." I picked up a piece of roasted wing and placed it in Maliyah's bowl. Looking at her reddened eyes, I felt an indescribable pain in my heart.
I didn't know how to tell Maliyah that none of this was her fault.
'It's me. I've harmed her. I offended someone I shouldn't have and ruined Maliyah's peaceful life,' I thought.
"Laurel, can I sleep with you tonight?" Maliyah raised her head and looked at me. Her expression looked normal and didn't seem to have changed at all.
'I'm the only one who knows she's actually different now. How could the white paper stained with dirt recover to its original state? But it doesn't matter. Time can calm everything down,' I thought.
"Okay." I smiled and nodded.
"Will Alex be upset?" asked Maliyah.
Maliyah looked at me with her curved eyes.
"No, he will not."
I held my fork and paused. I looked at Maliyah quietly, but I felt disgust for Alex, that old fox who had suddenly disappeared.
If men were reliable, pigs would fly.
Maliyah and I went to a nearby mall after dinner.
Maliyah looked the same as before along the way, but her forced happiness stung me a little.
We bought a lot of clothes, bags, shoes.
Maliyah looked really happy, but I didn't feel any less guilty.
I could find the right opportunity to talk to Maliyah.
I was scared she would choose to stay away from me and resent me.
We went back to our room after dinner.
Perhaps it had been a long day. I was also sleepy and slept until dawn.
When I woke up, I realized Maliyah was not on the bed. I suddenly sat up straight and walked quickly to the living room.
I secretly sighed with relief when I saw Maliyah in the living room.
"Maliyah, why don't you sleep a little longer?" I asked.
I stretched and walked back to the bathroom.
When I walked out, Maliyah stood still in a daze as if she had never moved.
"Maliyah, what's wrong?"
I saw she was frozen and hurried over.
Maliyah pointed at the news channel on the television and stammered for a long time, unable to say a complete sentence.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, I saw Angela panting as she looked at me. Just as she was about to speak, she saw Maliyah in the room. The corners of her mouth twitched. "Maliyah is here, too?"
"Laurel." Maliyah's voice trembled. "Vivian... Vivian's dead."
My heart skipped a beat. I looked at Maliyah and saw her suddenly cry.
"Is Maliyah alright?" Angela frowned and looked at Maliyah worriedly.
I shook my head gently. "It's fine. Vivian is her classmate. It's normal for her to be sad. Usually, she would be sad for several days if the little dog or cat downstairs died. It's fine."
Maliyah looked up at Angela and said, "Angela, I... I'll go back to my room and cry."
Angela was a little flattered and nodded.
I reached out and grabbed Angela's arm when Maliyah closed the door. I hurriedly asked, "Didn't I ask you to take Vivian back home yesterday? Why is she dead?"
Angela sighed softly and hurriedly turned on her phone.
I saw a news report that Vivian was hit by a falling billboard on her way back when she passed by the shops downstairs.
After investigation, many billboards were discovered loose due to the typhoon. Now, the city was undergoing renovation to prevent a similar tragedy from happening.
"It is called bad karma," said Angela in a low voice.
I frowned slightly and sighed. "You know?"
Angela glanced at me. "Laurel, you asked me to hack into someone else's hotel system. You didn't care about my life and death. I knew something must have happened but didn't expect it to be Maliyah."
"Maliyah doesn't want anyone to know about this." I lowered my voice.
Angela nodded and raised her hand to gesture at the corner of her mouth.
I thought for a moment and said in a deep voice, "Do you think Vivian's death was just an accident?"
"Laurel, whether it was an accident or not, it's an accident now. Do you understand?" Angela reached out and grabbed my arm, gently pressing it.
I understood what Angela meant.
I couldn't investigate it even if I had any doubts about Vivian's death.
Curiosity killed the cat.
Someone was able to silence Vivian without anyone knowing.
The strength of the other party was not something we could deal with.
Suddenly, my heart tightened as I remembered what Isaac had told me.
I couldn't help but shiver.
"Laurel, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" Angela reached out and helped me sit on the sofa.
I shook my head but was a little distraught. An inexplicable sense of anxiety welled up in me.
If the masterminds behind the series of events were Austin and Samantha, did they have something to do with Vivian's death?
I couldn't believe Austin who had stayed by my side for six years was so terrifying.
"Angela, I want all the information on Samantha," I said.
"Why do you need her information?" Angela's tone carried a trace of panic. She frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, "The daughter of the Harvey family is not someone we can touch casually. However, don't worry. You have Mr. Herrera to protect you. The Cole family won't touch you."
I grimaced and said, "But they've made a move on people close to me."
Also, how could that car accident be simple?
"Laurel, Vivian didn't know who was behind her."
"She won't die if she didn't know."
Angela was stunned.
"You mean the other party thought Vivian had betrayed them, so they killed her to silence her?" Angela couldn't help but shiver when she said so. She muttered softly, "Killing is illegal. Perhaps it was just an accident?"
