I was silent for a while. I couldn't help but feel a chill at Angela's words.
I thought about it carefully. If Samantha had spent so much effort to deal with me to make me back off, the accident in the suburbs definitely couldn't have been her doing.
However, Maliyah's accident must have something to do with her.
"Laurel, promise me you won't act rashly, okay?" Angela held my hand with a solemn expression.
At that moment, I suddenly felt Angela was no longer the impulsive, irritable, and chivalrous girl I remembered.
Of course, I know she is afraid of me getting hurt and even more afraid of losing me.
"Yeah."
Angela saw me nod and sighed in relief. "It's getting late. Don't you still have to go to the hospital to pick your mother up?"
I stood up and walked back into the room.
Maliyah slowly sat up from the bed and wiped the tears on her face. "Laurel, Aunt Yvette is discharged from the hospital today. I'll go back with you. Let's check out of the room."
Looking at Maliyah blinking her red and innocent eyes, I wanted to say she didn't have to force herself to go home with us, but I couldn't bring myself to say it.
I was afraid it would remind her of that painful night if I said it.
Maliyah, Angela, and I went to the hospital together. Unexpectedly, Javier went there earlier than us.
"Laurel, what's wrong with Maliyah?" Javier whispered to me.
"Her former classmate died in an accident," I said.
"Died?" Javier's eyes widened in surprise. However, he looked regretful a moment later. "Doesn't that mean Maliyah's classmate passed away in her twenties? How heartbroken her parents are!"
I gently patted Javier's arm and turned around to look at Maliyah, who was holding her luggage. Her expression revealed nothing out of the ordinary, except for the faint redness in her eyes.
I didn't know whether to be happy or sad for a moment.
Vivian and Maliyah were high school classmates. From junior high school, they were desk mates and lived in the same dormitory.
Vivian's family situation was a little complicated. Her parents were divorced.
She had always lived with her father. Later, her father married another woman and gave birth to a son.
Although their family was not from the countryside, her father favored boys over girls.
Without her mother, it was equivalent to losing her father, although her stepmother had never treated her harshly.
However, her stepmother treated her averagely. Other than going home during the holidays, Vivian usually stayed at school.
Firstly, she wanted to save on travel expenses. Secondly, she wanted to work and earn money.
Maliyah had a good relationship with Vivian. On weekends, she often brought Vivian home for dinner.
Vivian looked soft and weak, and even her voice was soft.
Maliyah's family liked Vivian quite a lot. Not only was she good-tempered and had a good personality, but she was also diligent.
Only Javier did not like her.
As for the reason why he didn't like Vivian, we had asked him, but he kept his mouth shut.
"What do you want to eat for lunch? I'll order takeout." Angela extended her phone to Javier with a faint smile in her eyes.
"No need. There's food at home," said Javier.
Angela was stunned and looked at me in confusion. I shrugged.
She leaned over to me and whispered, "Bonnie must have asked Javier to buy the food in the morning. No wonder he came so early. Fortunately, I ordered a cake. I'll drive you back first. Laurel, accompany me to get the cake."
I knew Angela had a lot to say, so she found an excuse for me to accompany her to get the cake.
After the car drove out of the apartment building, Angela's expression darkened as she said, "Laurel, have you contacted Mr. Herrera? Does he know your mother is discharged today?"
"My mother doesn't even care." I smiled. "He's probably busy."
I would have almost forgotten I had a husband if Angela hadn't reminded me.
"Laurel, you have to seize the opportunity. Today is such a rare day. Can't you take the initiative to contact him?" Angela looked anxious.
"He'll come when he has time. If he doesn't come, it means he's not free," I said casually. As if to others, Alex and I had known each other for a long time.
I knew Alex's personality. However, he could call or text me back if he didn't have time.
Alex seemed to have disappeared from the earth ever since the incident.
If I called him again, wouldn't I be embarrassing myself?
Angela glared at me with a resentful expression. I had a disapproving expression, but my heart still tightened from her question.
I had to think carefully about how to deal with my mother when she asked Alex.
However, I suddenly felt it was ridiculous.
Alex made a casual remark, but I took it as a promise. I was still full of hope that he would come to save me.
After taking the cake, Angela kept chattering in my ear.
"Actually, I think Mr. Herrera likes you. Otherwise, why would he casually give you a house in Honeydew Estate?" Angela frowned, and a flash of anger crossed her face. "Do you know I begged my father to buy a house here for three months?"
"I know." I nodded and glanced quizzically at Angela. "Are the houses here expensive?"
"Not only is it expensive, but it's also difficult to buy. Especially for a house as large as yours. It's even more difficult." Angela pondered momentarily. "You've registered your marriage.
If you don't have a wedding banquet, your mother will be suspicious, won't she? You both have been living apart. It's not good for the development of your relationship!"
"Angela, can you drive faster? If you go any slower, we can go home for dinner." I sighed helplessly.
Angela glanced at me and complained, "I just want you to have a backer."
"Maliyah still doesn't know she was hurt because of me."
Angela suddenly stopped the car and looked at me with a serious expression. "What do you mean she was hurt because of you? Is Vivian your friend?
Even if she was hurt because she is your friend, it has nothing to do with you. Don't blame everything on yourself. Well, is Vivian's death your fault?"
"If I didn't offend Samantha, Maliyah wouldn't..."
"Are you one hundred percent sure Samantha did it?" Angela frowned. "Laurel, Maliyah has chosen to forget about the matter completely. Just pretend you don't know it, okay?"
Angela sighed when she saw I was silent. "Think about your mother. Let the past be the past."
Angela gently patted my arm after getting out of the car. I pulled my lips into a stiff smile.
We smelled the fragrance of meat when we walked out of the elevator.
"Here you are." Alex stood up and walked forward. He reached out to take the cake in my hand and smiled.
