I stared blankly at Alex in front of me. 'Why is Alex here?' I thought.
It wasn't until Alex took the cake and turned to go back into the house that I came back to my senses.
Angela pinched my arm and glared at me. "Are you playing with me?"
"I didn't know he was coming either," I quickly explained, lowering my voice.
If I had known he was coming, I wouldn't have had to hide from my mother on tenterhooks, afraid she would discover something.
On the other hand, Maliyah was far better than I had expected as if nothing had happened.
Angela was right. Since Maliyah had chosen to forget, why should I harp on it?
What could it change even if I told her?
However, I felt as if something was blocking my heart, a dull pain.
"Wow, the food on the table is the takeout you ordered, right?" said Angela.
Angela could not help but tease. However, they couldn't possibly cook a whole table of dishes when we just went to get the cake.
"I hired a chef to cook at home," said Alex, smiling.
When Angela saw the familiar face in the kitchen behind her, her face revealed a trace of shock. Her breathing paused. "Mr. Herrera, I didn't expect you to be able to hire a five-star chef to cook at home. The smell..."
"Angela, you and Laurel are best friends. You can call me by my name. I can't keep calling you Miss Adams, can I?"
Alex's tone was gentle but gave off an irresistible strong sense of oppression.
Angela glanced at me, clearly asking for help.
I suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of schadenfreude in my heart. 'Let Angela experience an inexplicable tension and fear, so she didn't always want me to find Alex next time,' I thought.
Angela was forced to nod helplessly, and her face twisted into a stiff smile.
"Laurel, where is your room? Can you show me around?" asked Angela.
"It's on the other side. The password is her birthday. I'll call you when the meal is ready," said Alex.
"Okay," Angela replied quickly. Of course, she pulled me away even faster.
Angela lay on the sofa barefooted the moment she opened the door. Suddenly, she seemed to have thought of something and immediately stood up. Her little face revealed a helpless expression.
"No. Why... why would he give you another apartment?"
Angela could not even speak properly when she was nervous.
I looked at Angela, whose face was slightly pale from being frightened by Alex. I couldn't help but chuckle. "You seem to be afraid of him?"
Angela took a deep breath, walked to the table, picked up a bottle of mineral water, raised her head, and gulped down a few large mouthfuls.
"No. How could I be afraid of him?" Angela explained stubbornly. "He asked me to call his name. What kind of joke is it? How can I call his name? Even my father has to call him Mr. Herrera when he sees him. How can I call his name?"
"He just doesn't want you to call him Mr. Herrera in front of my mother," I said calmly as I looked around.
The room here was furnished the same way as the room opposite, except that I liked the decor and the furniture. Even the desk lamp was a favorite brand of mine.
The whole house had cream-colored doors with large floor-to-ceiling windows.
Everything was just like the dream home I had always wanted.
"Laurel, the decor here," said Angela.
"I designed it before." I narrowed my eyes slightly, but doubts arose in my heart. It also answered some of my confusion.
Why was the tableware in the house next door my favorite pattern? It turned out that Alex had studied me so thoroughly.
I had to admit he played the role of someone who loved me to the bone very convincingly.
"I've long felt he has ulterior motives toward you. Look at the decoration style here. Isn't it all based on what you like?" Angela hugged my shoulder, her face filling with envy. "If I could meet a man who loves me so much, I would go and get a marriage license with him immediately."
"Get a marriage license? Angela, not everyone can be as lucky as Laurel," said Javier.
"Javier, how dare you call me by my name?" Angela glanced at Javier.
Javier smiled awkwardly. "Alex is calling you."
I was stunned for a moment. 'Why did he call me?'
"He's not calling you. He thinks I'm occupying you." Angela revealed a malicious smile. Then, she gently patted my shoulder. "I'll leave the room for the two of you. I won't call you for dinner later."
Then Angela pulled Javier away.
Indeed, there are some questions I need to ask Alex alone!
I took a deep breath. I naturally couldn't show the slightest bit of cowardice before he arrived.
I heard the door close in less than five minutes.
When I saw Alex again, I suddenly realized I no longer felt the usual tension when I saw him.
Even when I faced his beautiful eyes, I would not forget to breathe because of my beating heart.
"Are you okay?" asked Alex.
"What's wrong with me?" I looked up at Alex and stood up from the sofa. I didn't like the feeling of him looking down at me.
"Sorry. I didn't receive your call," Alex apologized calmly.
I was stunned and forgot my identity.
Why should I expect an apology from him?
Austin often didn't answer my calls when I was with him. He even cut it off after I made several consecutive phone calls.
And I just called Alex once, though that call was urgent.
"It's fine." I smiled faintly, and my gaze fell on his bewitching and beautiful face again. "You don't need to apologize to me for such a trivial matter."
"But you're hurt." Alex suddenly raised his hand and lifted the hair from my forehead.
I used my thick bangs to cover the wound because I was afraid my mother would find out. If one did not look carefully, one could not tell.
My heart was pounding, and his cold touch made my entire body tremble.
His slender fingers were unbelievably cold.
'Is he ill?' I thought.
"I'm sorry. It won't happen again," said Alex.
My lips curled into a faint smile when I heard Alex's serious answer. "How can you guarantee that? Are you going to watch over me 24 hours a day?"
Alex didn't answer my question, but his beautiful eyes were fixed on me.
So, he could sometimes make people feel afraid and inexplicably sad when he wasn't smiling.
Flustered, I looked away. "Rest assured. I'll take care of myself. You don't have to worry."
"Well, I won't keep anyone who wants to hurt you," Alex said as he gently held my hand.
His expression darkened slightly when he saw the wound on my hand.
Instinctively, I withdrew my hand and said, "There's no one else here."
"It's no good for us to stay in the room too long." Alex reached for my hand again. "Why? Are you afraid of me?"
Actually, I just felt my hand was a little ugly when it was placed together with his.
