Marvin took me to the old street. The entire street was filled with open-air stalls. The night market could go on until two to three o'clock in the morning.
As long as there were customers in the shop, it would be open until dawn.
There would definitely not be a scene of people being chased away at the right time.
Angela and I used to come there often when we were in school.
However, Angela didn't want to come ever since she met Marvin there often.
Actually, Nifelheim City was neither big nor small.
Why it was so rare for me to meet someone I knew when I was alone?
Marvin said life was so wonderful. The more one didn't want to meet someone, the more one would meet them.
I thought it was just a matter of probability.
I wasn't particularly hungry, but my appetite suddenly woke up when I smelled the barbecue.
Marvin ordered some food and a few bottles of beer. He raised an eyebrow and said, "Will your husband be mad when you get drunk?"
His voice was neither loud nor soft, But the surrounding people raised their heads simultaneously and looked at us strangely.
I was used to the embarrassing situation.
Marvin was doing it on purpose.
"You took me away in front of my husband. Are you still afraid that he'll be angry?"
"That makes sense." Marvin cleared his throat. "If anything happens to me, don't forget about me."
I rolled my eyes.
Marvin was a police officer although he was a rich second-generation heir.
He had a pretty big conflict with his family because his family insisted on objecting.
Even the car he drove was borrowed from someone else at the last minute.
I wouldn't have asked Marvin for help if it weren't for the fact the matter today was urgent and I couldn't find anyone to save the situation.
Marvin smiled at me. "Are you getting more superstitious as you get older? You weren't such a superstitious person in the past!"
I couldn't be bothered with him. As I turned to change to a cold beer, my phone on the table began to vibrate.
"Your phone is ringing. Aren't you going to answer it?" Marvin pointed at my phone. Then he took out a cigarette and lit it.
"Just ignore it," I said.
I glanced at the caller ID. It was Alex.
He wouldn't have called me if he wanted to go back home. He would have texted me and went home.
The reason he called was to explain he had a reason not to go back home.
With Samantha's jealous personality, she would try her best to keep Alex.
It was to show her status in Alex's heart.
"If you don't pick up the phone, aren't you afraid..." Marvin's eyes darkened as he added, "Aren't you afraid Samantha might have a murderous intention?"
"This is a society governed by the law and protected by the police. What's there to be afraid of?"
Marvin lit his cigarette and took a deep puff. "The police can't protect everyone."
My heart sank. Marvin still couldn't forget what had happened in the past.
There was a reason why he wanted to be a police officer.
In Marvin's third year of junior high school, his classmate, a little girl, died in the river outside the school.
It would be the little girl's birthday in a few days. Marvin didn't have many friends and had a good relationship with the girl.
Some people said the girl chose to commit suicide because she was too stressed about her studies.
Some people said she might have died because her innocence was ruined.
In the end, there was no answer as to why the girl died.
People died every day. Who would care about an unrelated person? Besides, everyone was quite busy.
However, Marvin was the only one who was still brooding over the matter.
Not only because that girl was his classmate, but more importantly, that girl had once given him a love letter.
However, Marvin rejected her directly.
He felt that if she had committed suicide, he might be responsible, too.
It was also on the day the girl died that Marvin met her on the path.
However, she seemed to be talking to someone at that time.
It was raining that day, so Marvin mistook the people for someone from a girl's family.
However, Marvin realized something was wrong after she died.
However, when he provided the police with clues, the police only recorded it simply.
They did not investigate in detail.
Perhaps it was because of the guilt in his heart that Marvin decided to become a policeman.
Unfortunately, when Marvin investigated the case back then, he found out that the girl had committed suicide and left a suicide note when she died.
Even so, Marvin still felt something was wrong.
However, he couldn't continue investigating after so many years.
I looked up at Marvin and asked curiously, "Have you found a girlfriend?"
"No. I've been waiting for you."
I rolled my eyes expressionlessly and said coldly, "Marvin, you are not young anymore."
"No, I'm not young. But Angela is two years older than me, right? If she's not in a hurry, why should I be?"
I pursed my lips and said in a deep voice, "She has someone she likes. It's Isaac Parks."
As soon as I finished my words, Marvin's clear eyes could not help but reveal a hint of shock. His cold face instantly tensed up.
"No. how did she meet Isaac?"
"He came to Nifelheim City," I said quietly.
Marvin was stunned. "So you saw him, too?"
I took a bite of the roast just served and nodded.
"Laurel, you have to keep an eye on her. She is head over heels in love. She can't marry Isaac."
"Why do I feel like you have a big problem with Isaac?" I stared at Marvin, my eyes filling with doubt.
Marvin looked up and took a sip of beer. He glanced at me and said calmly, "Don't you know what the Parks family in Wadiff City does?
"The Parks family has connections that span both sides of the law. With such a background, what does it mean?" Marvin sneered.
"They are ruthless. Now they have turned over a new leaf and call themselves philanthropists. If Angela marries into the Parks family, the Adams family's company will be the Parks family's."
"You are also an Adams."
Marvin raised his head and said calmly, "I told you I won't fight with Angela for the inheritance. I won't take a single cent if it's not mine. I'm afraid when she marries Isaac, she might not even be able to keep her life."
Suddenly, there was a bang not far away.
Immediately after, there was a cry for help.
Marvin suddenly stood up and ran away.
I reacted instantly and picked up my phone to follow closely behind Marvin.
A barbeque shop was in a mess.
Many people in the shop had been stabbed, and one of them was the most seriously injured. Bright red blood had soaked the man's clothes.
A young man stood in the hall with a knife in his hand. He raised it high and slashed at Marvin.
Marvin didn't have time to dodge because he was fighting with another accomplice who had hurt people.
Without any time to think, I picked up a chair and threw it at that man.
That man staggered a few steps, turned around with a ruthless expression, and charged at me with a knife.
