TideShift Advertising Company used to be Maliyah's company. I didn't expect Jake to be one of the shareholders.
I looked up at Marvin in confusion, only to see him take his vibrating phone from his pocket.
He picked up the call and hung up less than a minute later.
"Jake is dead," he suddenly said. There was a hint of fatigue in his voice, and his expression was solemn.
Calum was in prison. The second person, Jake, was also dead.
What about the third man?
If all of this was just an ordinary accident or coincidence, it would no longer make sense.
However, I am certain Austin was not the one who harmed them.
Austin didn't have the brain or gut to do such a cruel thing to his friends.
Could it be Samantha?
In the end, I didn't ask because I knew even if I did, Marvin wouldn't tell me about it as a police officer.
It was because a murder case was already involved.
"I'll drive you back," said Marvin.
I nodded dumbly and took out my phone to check the time. It was already one in the morning.
Alex stopped calling me after he did once.
I got into Marvin's secondhand Mercedes-Benz.
We didn't speak the rest of the way.
There was music playing in Marvin's car. They were all classic songs. For some reason, listening to the songs in the night made one's hair stand on end.
The car stopped at the entrance of Honeydew Estate twenty minutes later.
Marvin opened the car door for me, looking as if he wanted to say something but hesitated.
"If there's nothing more to say, I'll be on my way?" I chuckled and clapped him gently on the shoulder.
"Laurel."
Marvin stood under the orange light. The light shone on the side of his face. His handsome facial features were unruly, especially his eyes. There seemed to be a hint of melancholy and hesitation.
"What's wrong? Can't bear to part with me?" I teased.
"Watch out for your cheap husband. He's not a nice man, either," said Marvin.
I smiled and nodded. Then I turned and walked into the neighborhood.
'A good man? I'm not a good person either. Because good people usually don't live long,' I thought.
I wrapped my leather jacket tightly around my body. It was quiet all around. A gust of wind blew, carrying traces of cold air.
Occasionally, I heard the chirping of insects and the sound of leaves swaying in the wind.
All of a sudden, the surrounding sounds seemed to have disappeared, and it fell into a dead silence.
I only heard the sound of my footsteps, and the thump of each step on the ground.
I kept feeling like there was a pair of eyes staring straight at me in the eerie silence.
My heart was pounding nonstop.
I had never been a coward, but a chill ran down my spine at that moment.
It was not until I walked into the building that I heaved a long sigh of relief.
The sensor light in the entryway lit up when I returned home.
Before I could walk to the living room after changing my shoes, I smelled a faint wooden perfume mixed with a hint of tobacco.
I was stunned when I saw Alex sitting on the sofa. My heart thumped twice.
However, I quickly regained my composure.
To my surprise, he came back home.
He sat alone on the sofa in the middle of the night without even turning on the lights, which was quite scary.
"I thought you weren't coming back home," Alex said.
There was a hint of coldness in Alex's voice. His voice no longer had the warmth he used to pretend but instead had a bit more sincerity.
I narrowed my eyes and smiled. "You've said everything I wanted to say."
"Did you come back to check up on me?" Alex slowly looked up at me. There was a faint smile in his beautiful eyes, but it made my heart turn cold.
In the next second, his gaze shifted to my swollen hand.
His face showed obvious displeasure. He sat up from the sofa and walked straight to me.
He was at least a 5.9-foot tall guy with a sharp gaze. My heart tightened, and I took two steps back in panic.
"Why are you injured?" asked Alex.
I looked up with a half-smile and met his cold, threatening eyes. "I accidentally fell."
"Even your clothes are torn?" said Alex, smiling. "Take off your clothes."
I was slightly surprised when I heard his words.
I subconsciously took two steps back and said, "I'm tired."
"You still know you are tired?" Alex reached out his slender and beautiful fingers and gently slid them across my cheek. "Throw away the clothes you're wearing. I don't like other men's things at home. What do you think I want to do?"
Apparently, Alex was trying to embarrass me.
He stared hard at me.
I frowned. I was unwilling but still took off my jacket for some reason. It was already broken anyway. So what if I threw it away?
"Go and take a shower." Alex's cold voice entered my ears again with a commanding tone.
I wanted to refuse but couldn't say a word when I opened my mouth.
Alex seemed to have lost his patience. He looked up and glanced at me again. "What are you afraid of? You smell like barbecue. I'm a clean freak."
I gritted my teeth and walked into the bathroom. He even smoked and hooked up with another woman. I didn't even despise him, but he despised me.
I complained inwardly. However, I was paid, so I had to be obedient. Only then could I hug the rich Alex tightly.
More importantly, I had to be justified as soon as possible. Perhaps only then would there be less danger around me.
After taking a shower, I went straight to my room and wrapped myself up tightly.
Not long after, I heard the sound of water flowing from the bathroom. My heart tightened for some reason.
I urged myself to sleep quickly but instantly regretted it. 'Should I sleep in another room?' I thought.
At the thought of that, I immediately got up from the bed and tiptoed out of the room. Suddenly, I saw Alex's phone screen on the desk light up.
[The person has been dealt with.]
The moment I read the message, I couldn't help but recall what Marvin said before he left.
Then I heard the sound of water stopping in the bathroom. I quickly retracted my gaze, turned around, and walked to the bedroom next door.
The moment I closed the door, I leaned against it and grimaced in pain. Damn it, I forgot about the wound on my shoulder.
I locked the door and lay down on the bed. My drowsiness dissipated perhaps because of the pain or because of the message I had read.
My phone screen lit up at that moment. I was stunned. I turned on my phone and saw a message from Maliyah.
[Laurel, you and Alex are back?]
I was stunned and couldn't help but feel puzzled. Could it be that Maliyah heard the door close when we went out?
However, the soundproofing there was great. She could not hear it.
I thought about it. Maybe it was a message from Javier to Maliyah.
