"Come on, I'll take you back." Alex looked at me with a fond expression.
"No, I can go back myself," I said.
Alex wrinkled his nose. "Where did you get a car?"
"No, it's a shared bike!" I explained.
Alex's expression suddenly broke into a smile. "I'll take you to buy one you like later."
I nodded hesitantly. It would probably be easier to have my own electric bike.
"Alex," Samantha suddenly spoke up, her soft, watery eyes fixed on Alex with affection. A hint of emotion choked her voice. "Didn't you say you'd have dinner with me later?"
Alex stopped walking, his gaze fixed on Samantha, his face darkening. "I'm going to send Laurel back. Don't you already have someone to have dinner with?"
Samantha hurried forward, reaching out to grab his arm, pleading in her eyes. "Alex, don't you have a meeting this afternoon? When are we going back to Newton City?"
Alex turned around. His eyes landed on his assistant, Danny Ferry, who was standing a little ways off, still looking bewildered.
"Danny, cancel my afternoon meeting."
"Alex—" Samantha's voice rose in shock as she stared at him.
Alex looked at the furious Samantha with a cold expression, and then shifted his gaze to Abigail. He raised his voice as he said, "Samantha, control your cousin. You know I'm not a patient man."
Abigail froze, frowning. "Alex, you... Why..."
'Wondering why Alex would side with me who only loves him for his money?' I thought to myself, a smile curling on my lips. "That's because our relationship is always based on money."
"Abigail, don't act like you don't love money at all," I said.
"Laurel, you..."
"Shut up!" Samantha suddenly yelled at Abigail.
Before the word "bitch" could escape Abigail's lips, she was cut off.
Abigail froze, shock and hurt flashing across her face as she looked at Samantha, who was glaring at her.
I couldn't help but smile. Abigail was really an idiot.
She didn't realize that her words had offended three people.
Not only did her words make Alex disgusted with her, but she also revealed to Samantha the painful truth: Alex, the man she wanted so desperately, would rather love a "bitch" than her.
It was both pathetic and ironic.
Alex's lips curved into a slight smile. His cold features softened for a moment. He glanced at Samantha and said, "You all can go back first. I'll go back with Laurel tomorrow."
Before anyone could react, Alex took my arm and led me into the elevator.
As soon as the doors closed, Alex let go of my arm.
I watched the smile on his breathtakingly handsome face disappear in an instant. Reflexively, I took a step back.
It would be a lie to say that I was not afraid.
I watched the elevator numbers tick down, and my heart raced.
An inexplicable fear wrapped around me, layer after layer.
It felt like Alex might devour me alive in the next second.
I took a deep breath and turned to look at him.
"You called me?" he asked.
I didn't really want to say anything, but I knew if I let him sense my fear, he'd have me right where he wanted me. He might even think I was easy to manipulate.
"Why are you here?" Alex lowered his gaze, his long lashes fluttering slightly.
I sighed quietly. "Backing down will only make me a target. And Samantha answered the phone."
"So you didn't believe what she said and came here just to provoke her?" Alex turned his head, locking eyes with me.
His face was unreadable, and I couldn't tell whether he was angry or not.
But I knew I couldn't lie to him.
After all, Alex was smart. He'd see right through me.
"Yes. I just want to tear off her false mask." I paused, suddenly surprised by my own words.
Looking at Alex, I asked, "You believe me?"
Alex smiled. "I have cameras in my office."
After hearing what he said, I said a bit unhappily, "So you already knew Samantha was lying, huh?"
Perhaps Alex always knew Samantha's true nature.
He had probably been pretending all along.
He was cautious about her, which meant I was likely causing him trouble.
When the elevator doors opened, I quickly added, "You don't have to send me back. I can go on my own."
Alex's lips curled into a smirk, his brows furrowing. "You're afraid of me?"
I was definitely afraid of him, but I couldn't admit it. "No, I'm just worried I'll delay your work."
Alex smiled, and his expression softened back into its usual, more relaxed demeanor.
"No worries." He glanced me up and down before patting me on the shoulder with a serious tone. "Even if you're an ugly daughter-in-law, you'll have to meet the in-laws eventually."
'Is he calling me ugly again? Where am I ugly?' I thought, my frustration rising.
I furrowed my brows, but when I thought about it, compared to him, I probably didn't look as good. But still, I wasn't ugly... right?
And I certainly didn't have Samantha's aura.
The confidence that came from growing up with wealth was something I would never have. They were proud, calm, and self-assured.
I sighed softly. I was about to go return the shared bike when Alex's phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the caller ID and his face immediately darkened.
He answered the phone, hanging up less than three minutes later.
The dark aura surrounding him made me want to run away.
But I knew I couldn't escape. I had to stay by Alex's side if I wanted to secure the 1.5 million dollars from Kailyn, even if it cost me my life.
"Who pissed you off?" I asked carefully, looking at him with sympathy. "Don't take it out on me. I'm really timid."
"You're timid?" Alex sneered. He then thought it over, and a laugh escaped him. "Yeah, you used to be such a good girl. Now, it's like you've changed. Anyone who doesn't know would think you're a completely different person!"
Alex suddenly bent down, his deep eyes locking onto mine, his gaze unyielding. "I'm taking you shopping for clothes. We're going back to Newton City tomorrow. Don't be scared then!"
The familiar scent of Alex's distinctive perfume and his body heat hit me. His eyes, as bright and intense as stars, made my body unexpectedly flush with warmth.
