I was sitting in the car. The temperature in the car seemed to have been turned up a few degrees.
The car was quiet, isolating the sound of the rain pattering against the windows.
There was a faint scent of cologne and a trace of alcohol on Alex's body.
The front fender of the car loomed, dividing the space between us and the driver.
I guessed that Alex didn't want anyone to see what he looked like when he was drunk.
I took a deep breath and glanced at Alex sitting with his eyes closed.
He'd had a few drinks at dinner, and now he seemed a bit drunk.
Just as I was about to close my eyes for a nap, Alex sat up straight, his expression turning serious.
I'd never seen him look so cold before—it was a little scary.
"What's your relationship with Isaac?" His gaze slowly shifted to me, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "If there's no relationship, why were you so nervous when you saw Isaac?"
'Nervous?' I thought.
I hadn't realized Alex could pick up on that.
I bit my lower lip and whispered, "Isn't it normal to be a little nervous around a handsome guy like Isaac?"
Suddenly, Alex leaned toward me, narrowing his eyes. He brushed a loose strand of hair from my forehead, tucking it behind my ear. "So, am I good-looking, or is Isaac better-looking?"
My mind went blank, and I instinctively raised my hands to push against his chest.
We were in a car, and I was not sure if he was drunk or just angry.
I quickly steadied my breath and replied seriously, "Of course, you're good-looking. Otherwise, I wouldn't have married you."
A small, sexy smile curved Alex's lips, but his eyes held a mocking gleam.
"I thought it was my money you were after," he said.
"Who'd refuse money?" I forced a fake smile.
Alex narrowed his eyes, then sat back again.
Finally, I could breathe normally again. This Alex—he couldn't stop tempting me.
Casually, he grabbed a bottle of mineral water from the door compartment and took a sip.
"Not only do I have money and looks, but I must also be good in bed, right?" he said.
"What?" I blushed instantly, embarrassment flooding me.
After a moment of stunned silence, I realized there must be cameras in front of the company.
"How can you just eavesdrop on other people's conversations?" I said, a little flustered. I was secretly chagrined—clearly, I would need to be on constant alert around Alex from now on. He might even plant a bug on me at some point.
Alex sneered. "I just hope there aren't any secrets between us that can't be made public."
I raised an eyebrow and looked at him with a calm expression. "So, how much are your personal assets?"
"About tens of billions. I don't really care about the exact amount," Alex answered without hesitation.
"You're not worried I'll run off with your fortune?" I asked.
He glanced at me lazily, his lips curling into a light smile. "You'd better worry about how to get my heart. If I were all yours, my money would naturally follow."
I bit my lip and quickly shifted my gaze, smiling faintly.
This was clearly an attempt to seduce me, using money as bait.
But I wasn't foolish enough to take him at his word.
Cunning people were always good at lying.
He was Alex! He had seen all kinds of women. He chose me just to block those who might get in his way. And he thought that I was easy to manage.
After all, a little money could buy me off.
In this way, it wouldn't spark gossip, nor would it leave any evidence behind.
What he was doing now was just a test.
Therefore, I would never do something to offend him.
I was just relying on his power to challenge Samantha.
In fact, it was all because I could feel that he was bored with Samantha.
"I've never like women who are too smart for their own good," he said.
I smiled knowingly and nodded.
It was rare for him to speak so honestly.
Indeed, if I wasn't so stupid, I wouldn't have stayed by Austin's side for six whole years.
"Are you being sarcastic, or are you praising me?" I asked.
Alex sighed. "I just want to remind you not to be too smart sometimes."
"Does that mean you want to marry Kailyn?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
Alex looked up at me, his gaze soft but his smile gone. His voice sank into seriousness. "Do you think I'm the type of person who often changes?"
I nodded slightly. "Don't worry, I won't betray you."
Alex heard my answer and nodded in satisfaction.
Alex sure knew how to play his cards.
"If you ever want to ask anything, just ask. You know I'm not very smart," I said with a sigh.
Alex looked at me with a smile, his gaze light and teasing. "Not?"
"I don't need you to keep me company this afternoon. I'm going to hang out by myself," I said.
Alex lowered the front fender, then spoke slowly. "Stop at the mall up ahead."
The car braked slowly, pulling over to the side of the road.
"Take this." Alex pulled out a black card from his pocket and handed it to me. "This is my affiliate card. Everything you need for future events we attend together will be covered by this."
"Thanks, boss," I said, accepting the card with a smile.
I wasn't about to be polite to someone worth ten billion dollars.
When I saw the car drive off, I let out a long breath.
I pulled out my phone from my bag and glanced at the caller ID—it was Angela calling.
I then answered the phone.
There was a note of excitement in Angela's voice. "Laurel, where are you?"
"National Mall," I said, stretching my stiff body.
I headed up to the sixth floor to the men's department. I had ruined Marvin's clothes yesterday, and while it wasn't my fault, that poor Marvin's tiny monthly salary meant it would take him at least two months of not eating or drinking to afford a replacement.
Sometimes I think Marvin's an oddball—he's a rich kid but lives a modest life, taking on the most dangerous work.
"Laurel, where are you?" Angela asked.
"National Mall," I replied.
"What floor?" Angela's voice held a hint of urgency.
I paused, slightly confused. "Seventh floor."
The sixth floor was the men's department, while the seventh was for women's clothing.
"Then wait for me! I'll be right there—don't move!" Angela said.
I frowned. Before I could respond, Angela had already hung up the phone.
Five minutes later, Angela appeared in front of me, her face radiating suppressed excitement.
"Laurel, Isaac is opening a business in Nifelheim City and wants to collaborate with my family," she said.
Angela took my arm, her dark eyes sparkling as if they were twinkling stars in the sky.
I hadn't seen her this happy in a long time.
I couldn't help but stop in my tracks. I looked at her, confused. "I thought you didn't like Kailyn? Have you thought about how you'll get along with her if you marry Isaac?"
