Samantha didn't realize that I was actually here to sell the ruby.
After appraisal, the ruby topped out at one million dollars—300 thousand dollars more than my original bid.
Naturally, it made sense to sell it.
"I'll give you 2 million dollars, but remember what you just said," Samantha said.
"That's a deal," I replied with a smile. "But I don't accept checks, only bank transfers."
Samantha didn't hesitate at all, almost as if she feared I'd change my mind the next second.
In less than twenty minutes, I received a transfer notification for 2 million dollars.
As expected, the Harvey Group is a big operation—such a large sum could be transferred so quickly just like that.
"Laurel, are you crazy?" Angela tugged lightly at my arm, her voice soft with a hint of concern.
But I could tell she was also a bit nervous.
Obviously, she never thought that I was bold enough to cheat Samantha out of her money.
"I didn't expect this ruby to fetch 2 million dollars. I'll treat you to a big meal later," I said, raising my hand to gently pinch Angela's face, which was still worried and confused.
"Don't you need to buy a gift?" she asked.
"Gift? Alex said he's taking me back to Newton City, not to the Herrera family," I said.
I paused, my gaze drifting to Samantha's bright face. I raised an eyebrow, and a playful look spread across my features. "Kailyn's the one who needs to buy a gift for Lena and Raphael. After all, she's marrying into the Herrera family."
Samantha's expression instantly darkened.
I quickly added, "Miss Harvey, if there's jewelry for sale next time, I'll definitely come back here."
With that, I tugged on Angela's arm and turned to leave.
It wasn't until we were in the elevator that I let out a long breath.
"Laurel, you've gotten so bold—daring to cheat Samantha out of her money!" Angela laughed, her voice full of disbelief.
"Where did I cheat her? She was the one who overpaid for the ruby. Even the store manager warned her that it was only worth a maximum of one million dollars. She insisted on paying me 2 million dollars." I glanced at Angela. "She got herself into this mess."
"You fooled her. Are you not afraid she'll retaliate?" Angela's smile faded as concern crept into her face.
I patted her shoulder. "Are you going to risk big things for the sake of small ones?"
"Of course not," Angela said.
"Then there's nothing to worry about." I shrugged, a slight smile on my lips. "Samantha's always been proud and arrogant. How could she admit to overpaying for the ruby? It would only make her look foolish and unprofessional."
"True," Angela agreed, but she still seemed uneasy. "But you made her take such a huge loss—she won't just let you get away with it."
"Don't worry, she won't have the time to deal with me right now" I said.
Angela froze. "You don't think Kailyn really wants to marry into the Herrera family, do you?"
"I think so. Didn't we hear that Isaac's staying in Nifelheim City for the Herrera Group's new industrial park development?"
Angela blinked. "What do you mean?"
I smiled calmly. "It means that if the Herrera Group wants to get involved in this project, they'll have to rely on the Parks family to establish a foothold in Nifelheim City."
"No way! What about you?" Angela asked, wide-eyed.
"Kailyn's fine with me being the third party," I said casually.
"Crazy," Angela said.
"Actually, I don't mind." I shrugged nonchalantly.
"But the Herrera Group is one of the biggest corporations in the world! Why wouldn't they be able to get a foothold in Nifelheim City without anyone's help?" Angela said.
Looking at Angela's innocent face, I raised my hand and gently touched her head. "Where are all these 'whys' coming from? In the world of children, there are countless questions, but in the world of adults, there are only results."
The Herrera Group might rule Newton City, but in Nifelheim City, even the Harvey family might not be eligible for the industrial park project—mostly because of the new mayor. More importantly, only the Parks family had the clout to get involved.
After all, the Parks family's businesses had been a major source of tax revenue for the government over the years.
The real economy and new media industries were Nifelheim's future.
Once the industrial park was built, the government would need to attract investors.
They didn't want to bring in small, unknown companies that would just go bankrupt after a few years.
More importantly, the government wouldn't risk bringing in a company that hadn't worked with them before. If the financial chain collapsed midway, the whole project could be delayed.
To solve that, at least two companies needed to co-invest in the industrial park.
The Parks family couldn't take on such a large project by themselves, so they were looking for a partner.
Naturally, the Herrera Group was eager to make its mark in Nifelheim City and wouldn't let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity slip away.
"Mr. Herrera won't just dump you for profit, right?" Angela furrowed her brow and gave me a worried look. "No, absolutely not. Marriage isn't a business deal. How can he just divorce you for profit?"
Looking at Angela's troubled expression, I squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Don't worry. Alex never said anything about divorcing me."
I lowered my voice.
In fact, based on Alex's subtle reactions at the dinner table, I could tell he didn't like the feeling of being forced.
So I was pretty sure he wouldn't compromise for the industrial park.
After all, he was Alex—the high and mighty, eccentric Alex.
"He hasn't said anything now, but that doesn't mean he won't change his mind in the future," Angela said.
Angela's face changed. "He hasn't been open about your relationship either. What if he ends up choosing Kailyn for profit?"
She sounded anxious, her face full of worry.
I understood her panic. If Alex did divorce me, Samantha wouldn't let me off easily. Even Abigail, whom I had offended, wouldn't forgive me for slashing her face.
More importantly, I'd become a woman everyone in Nifelheim would look down on and ridicule.
Remarrying would be nearly impossible for me.
"Laurel, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have encouraged you to get married to him,"Angela said, on the verge of tears.
I quickly reassured her, "Angela, this isn't your fault. Don't worry, Alex will never divorce me."
"Seriously?" Angela asked.
I smiled and touched the bracelet on my wrist.
"Alex made a decision, and there's no outside interference that can change it," I said.
"Don't act like you know him so well," Angela said, rolling her eyes.
"Silly girl, haven't you forgotten? My greatest skill isn't just my strength—it's my ability to read people's hearts." I took a deep breath, then spoke again after a pause, "And I have a trump card up my sleeve."
Angela stared at me in disbelief, her eyes wide. "What trump card?"
