"Trump card?" Angela's bright eyes blinked at me, her gaze filled with curiosity and questions.
I nodded, maintaining a calm demeanor.
"What is it?" She frowned slightly, her face serious.
"It's trump card, so of course, I can't let you know when everything's so uncertain," I replied.
Angela shot me a sidelong glance. "Don't lie to me. There's no such thing as a 'trump card', right?"
"Where would I find the courage to lie to you?" I raised my eyebrows and gently patted her hand. "Don't be silly. If Kailyn really married Alex, we'd lose 5 million dollars. Do you think someone as shrewd as me would let you lose that much?"
Angela paused for a moment, her expression conflicted.
"Don't worry," I said confidently. "In less than three months, that 5 million dollars will be in both our pockets."
Just then, my phone rang.
When I pulled it out and saw the caller ID, my heart skipped a beat.
Angela quickly leaned over and said in worry, "Is that your husband? Is he calling to blame you?"
Seeing the nervous expression on her face, I couldn't help but feel both amused and irritated. "Can't you just say something good?"
"I'm just preparing your heart for it," Angela said with a grin.
I smiled and answered the call.
Alex's low, husky voice came through, tinged with a hint of coldness. "Why haven't you gone shopping for clothes yet?"
I narrowed my eyes and lowered my voice. "No rush. Don't wait up for me to come back for dinner tonight. I just ran into Angela."
There was a brief silence, then Alex's voice came again, cool and calculated.
"Are you doing something wrong and trying to cover it up?" he said.
I could almost feel his anger through the phone, and it made my heart sink. My hand holding the phone began to shake a little.
'Has Samantha gone and complained? Said I'd cheated her?' I thought.
But she was the favorite daughter of the Harvey family. She wouldn't go complaining to Alex for one million dollars.
It must be Alex testing me again.
I furrowed my brow and couldn't help but wonder, 'What's wrong with this guy? Or maybe he's just tired, not in a good mood? Is that why he's been so paranoid all day?'
I decided to shift the conversation. "Can I at least get reimbursed for dinner?"
"Yes," Alex replied.
I let out a breath of relief at his affirmative answer.
"But remember to eat less. I'll tell your mom we'll be home later for dinner," he reminded.
I paused, surprised. I didn't expect him to even think about going home to eat with my mom, much less give me an excuse.
'Why would he do that?' I thought.
It almost made it seem like he's had a thing for me for years. My heartbeat quickened, and I softened my voice. "Okay, I understand."
I didn't hang up immediately—maybe out of professional habit or maybe because there was still a trace of fear toward Alex on the other end of the line.
"Who told you Kailyn wants to marry into the Herrera family?" Alex's voice, still low and magnetic, carried a touch of casualness.
My lips compressed into a thin line. Then I said, trying to keep my voice steady, "Isn't that ture?"
Alex gave a nonchalant "hmm" and continued, "That's just someone's wishful thinking."
"I see," I replied, maintaining my composure.
I wasn't going to act like those other women—one still had to be a little self-aware.
After I hung up, I sighed deeply.
"What's wrong? Did Samantha tell on you?" Angela asked, her eyes sharp with curiosity.
I nodded, then shook my head.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
I smiled gently. "Nothing. The Parks family will be heading to Newton City tomorrow."
Angela froze for a second, frowning. "Are they going there to talk about marriage?"
I smiled. "Tomorrow is going to be something."
"Are you really not worried about Kailyn stealing your position as Alex's wife?" she said.
I looped my arm through hers. "Are you worried Samantha won't be able to deal with Kailyn?"
Angela frowned, her eyes sweeping over mine. She fell silent for a moment, then a look of realization crossed her face.
"So you said that in front of Samantha because you want to see them fight it out?" she said.
"Do you really think any woman would try to get close to Alex if everyone knew he was married?" I said.
"Of course, there'd still be some," Angela replied with a shrug. "Unless he stops being president of the Herrera Group or, I don't know, becomes seriously ill. In that case, maybe people would lose interest. But even then, there'd be some. After all, there's a huge inheritance at stake if he dies."
"Angela, you've really got a lot of nerve to say that!" I said.
Angela glanced at me with sudden panic. "Laurel, I'm just worried about you. Don't tell anyone what I said—especially not your husband. Otherwise, I'm afraid I won't live to see tomorrow's sun if he knows."
Seeing her nervous face, I almost burst into laughter. I patted her shoulder and whispered, "But you're right. Maybe I should just poison him, so no one will come for him anymore."
Angela shot me an unhappy look, rolling her eyes. "Laurel, can you find someone more attractive than your husband?"
I thought long and hard, then shook my head.
After all, there weren't many guys as good as Alex in this world, so it was impossible for me to find another one like him.
Angela dragged me to a brand store and picked out several outfits for me to try on.
Frankly, I didn't care much about the brand.
As long as the clothes were comfortable and suited me, I was good.
As I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I noticed the familiar face staring back. It was beautiful, but my eyes looked empty and tired.
"Laurel, these sets are lovely," Angela said brightly, a smile playing on her lips. "They'll definitely help you win over your husband."
I smiled inwardly, though I wasn't entirely sure about what she said.
Just then, a sneer came from behind me.
"People nowadays are really shameless. They haven't even gotten married yet, and they're already thinking of someone else as their 'husband'," someone said.
I turned around to find Kailyn standing before me, her gaze condescending with a hint of a sneer. "Natalie, how can you say that about Miss Parks? After all, she's someone who can stand by Alex's side and wait on him."
Another woman, dressed in purple, looked me up and down with a bored expression. "In ancient times, a woman like that would've ended up as nothing more than a servant."
Laughter followed.
Angela's face turned red with anger, but I quickly grabbed her arm to calm her down.
"Miss Shepherd, I'm assuming you're here to buy a gift for Lena?" I said with a smile. "It's a shame, though, it's already a bit too late."
Kailyn looked at me, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
I smiled lightly. "Miss Shepherd, you want to visit Lena at the Herrera family, but don't know what she likes, do you?"

I nodded, maintaining a calm demeanor.
