"Kailyn, don't believe anything this woman says. What could she possibly know?" The woman in the purple dress fixed her gaze on me, and her smile was filled with cold mockery.
"If you don't believe me, then forget it," I said slowly, before turning around and taking Angela's arm. A trace of fatigue appeared on my face. "Let's go grab a cup of coffee. I'm a little tired."
"Stop." Kailyn suddenly called out to me.
"What do you want?" Angela immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me protectively. She was afraid that Kailyn might try to bully me.
The Parks family's young lady had always been arrogant and domineering, acting as if no one else mattered. But now that Kailyn wanted to marry to marry Alex, she naturally had to restrain her temper.
More importantly, she wouldn't be foolish enough to argue with Angela in public.
If the Parks family wanted to maintain their footing in Nifelheim City, they couldn't afford to make an enemy of the Adams family, at least not for now.
Kailyn stared at me intently. "What were you going to say?"
"Kailyn, how can you believe anything this woman says?" The woman in purple spoke up anxiously. "She's a nobody. How could she possibly know what Mrs. Herrera likes? She's probably just setting a trap for you."
Kailyn lifted her head and glanced at the woman in purple, pausing for a moment before speaking. "Whether I believe her or not is my choice."
The woman in purple seemed to realize that she'd spoken too much and irritated Kailyn. She had no choice but to nod obediently.
"Go on, then. What does Mrs. Herrera like?" Kailyn's tone carried a hint of command.
I had already anticipated that Kailyn wouldn't trust me so easily. But she wasn't completely certain about what Lena liked either. If she bought the wrong gift, not only would it fail to win favor, but it could also end up making her look bad.
Besides, the elderly couple of the Herrera family rarely appeared in public, possibly due to their age. Very few people knew about their preferences. Even bribing their servants for information was difficult.
So if Kailyn had a chance to find out what the couple liked, even if she couldn't fully trust me, she wouldn't let go of this rare opportunity.
After all, everyone knew that Samantha was the Herrera elderly couple's ideal daughter-in-law.
If Kailyn wanted to successfully marry Alex, she needed their approval.
Angela took a deep breath and looked at me with confusion.
I calmly pressed her arm and slowly said, "The ruby I bought at the auction not long ago."
Kailyn let out a cold laugh. "Laurel, do you think I'm a fool? Didn't you buy that ruby yourself? Are you trying to sell it off at a higher price? Running out of money and getting ready to admit defeat?"
I lowered my gaze and smiled faintly. "And why do you think I bought that ruby in the first place?"
"Wasn't it just to show off at the auction?" The woman in purple sneered and shot me a disdainful look.
I couldn't understand why the woman in front of me was so hostile toward me. Maybe it was because she wanted to stand up for Kailyn.
I said, "Because that ruby was meant to be a birthday gift for Austin's mother."
The woman in purple let out a cold snort, cutting me off before I could finish. "Kailyn, you're supposed to be meeting Mrs. Lena Herrera, not Austin's mother. What she likes is completely irrelevant."
Kailyn had lost her patience. She shook off the woman in purple's hand and said coldly, "What do you know? The most difficult person to deal with in the Herrera family is Amanda. Winning her favor is much better than making her an enemy."
I smiled faintly. It seemed Kailyn had done her homework.
She came to Nifelheim City with the sole purpose of securing a chance to marry Alex. She hadn't expected Samantha, whom she initially saw as a threat, to be ruthlessly dismissed by Alex himself.
That left only me, a woman with no status and no background.
In a way, I had done Kailyn a huge favor.
The Parks family no longer had to deal with Samantha and could now smoothly marry into the Herrera family.
"Name your price. How much do you want for the ruby?" Kailyn's gaze darkened as she stared at me.
I replied, "Two million dollars."
Shock flashed through Kailyn's eyes, and her expression immediately turned grim. "If I remember correctly, you bought that ruby for 600 thousand dollars at the auction. How dare you ask for 2 million dollars?"
I shook my head and calmly explained, "I'm not asking you. But if you want to buy it, that's the price."
She asked, "Laurel, have you lost your mind over money?"
"I already sold the ruby to Samantha. She paid two million for it," I said with a smirk.
Kailyn's expression darkened even further, and she glared at me viciously.
She clearly hadn't expected me to sell the ruby to Samantha.
"Don't be mad, Miss Shepherd. You can ask her to sell it to you for 2 million dollars. I just sold it not long ago." I cleared my throat and added, "Miss Harvey doesn't know Austin's mother likes the ruby. If you act fast, you might still be able to get it."
Standing nearby, Natalie glanced at the furious Kailyn and tried to reason with her. "Kailyn, Samantha was willing to spend 2 million dollars to buy it. She won't sell it for just that amount. Don't waste so much money just to please someone outside the family."
Kailyn turned her sharp gaze toward me. "Laurel, I'm curious. Why are you helping me?"
I sighed softly and gave Angela a glance. "What choice do I have? Without Alex as a backup, I need to find another tree to cling to."
Kailyn pondered my words for a moment before sneering. "Looks like you're not as stupid as I thought. Don't worry. If I marry into the Herrera family, I won't forget this favor. But if you're lying to me, I'll make sure you regret it."
With that, she turned and left the store.
Angela frowned, looking at me in confusion. "Laurel, you don't have to put up with this for my sake. Kailyn... never mind, let's not talk about her."
I smiled and took Angela's hand, lowering my voice. "How about a free front-row seat to some drama?"
"What do you mean?" Angela looked at me in confusion, then glanced at the hurriedly departing Kailyn. "Wait... is she going to buy that ruby for two million dollars? Samantha will sell it. She could make a million-dollar profit just like that."
I took Angela to the jewelry store. When Kailyn inquired about red gemstones, the store manager's face lit up with excitement and immediately took out the necklace I had just sold.
As soon as Kailyn asked about the price and pulled out her card to pay without hesitation, Samantha suddenly walked into the store. Samantha slapped Kailyn across her face.
