Angela gripped my hand tightly, unable to recover from her shock for quite some time.
She said, "I always thought Samantha was the refined and gentle type. She doesn't seem like someone who would resort to physical violence."
Looking at Angela's bewildered expression, I suddenly realized how fortunate she was to have a formidable mother and, of course, a brother like Marvin, who never fought for anything.
If either of them had been different, Angela might not have survived this long.
But one thing I never understood. Angela was such a kind-hearted person, but she couldn't tolerate her own brother, Marvin.
Homewreckers deserved to be despised and scorned. But not every woman knew if the man she was dating already had a family.
And I had always believed that my mother had been deceived by Maddox.
Someone as principled as my mother would never have willingly destroyed another family. Even after getting pregnant with me, she never asked Maddox for a single penny.
It was obvious Maddox was quite generous with his money. Otherwise, Mavis wouldn't have stayed by his side for so many years.
But no matter how well Maddox treated Mavis, she was nothing more than a second-class citizen, forever beneath him.
Of course, that had been her own choice. A price she had to pay for the mistakes of her youth.
Perhaps Mavis saw a reflection of her younger self in me, which was why she tried to warn me, hoping I wouldn't repeat her mistakes.
And she probably knew the Parks family better than anyone. Given Kailyn's personality, her tolerance for my existence was only temporary.
Sooner or later, she would do everything in her power to erase me from Alex's life completely. After all, there wasn't a single decent person in the Parks family.
If they weren't formidable players, how else could they have used the Nifelheim City project to force Alex into submission? Too bad they miscalculated.
Alex was a cunning man. Maybe the moment Alex arrived in Nifelheim City and insisted on getting a marriage certificate with me, he had already seen through the ill intentions lurking around.
Just like he said, there were plenty of people caught up in their wishful thinking. And not just women. Men, too.
"Laurel, what's wrong? You look so lost in thought." Angela pulled at my arm, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "The Harvey and the Parks families are terrifying. I don't feel comfortable letting you go to Newton City alone."
Seeing her worried and anxious expression, I gently patted her hand in reassurance. "There's nothing to be afraid of. Samantha won't lay a hand on me."
Angela massaged her temples before quickly replying, "She even hit Kailyn."
I took a deep breath and nodded. "Exactly. Besides Samantha, who else would dare to touch someone from the Parks family?"
Angela asked, "So... is she trying to scare Kailyn off?"
I nodded and had a gloating smile.
Unfortunately, I was too far away. I only saw Samantha slap Kailyn, but I couldn't hear what was said between them.
Not only did Kailyn fail to get that ruby, but she also got slapped for no reason.
"I thought they were actually going to fight." Angela pouted in disappointment. "I can't believe Kailyn just let it slide."
But I had expected this all along. Kailyn would never fight back, at least not here, in Samantha's territory.
She wasn't stupid enough to provoke the Harvey family's eldest daughter. But that didn't mean she would simply swallow this humiliation.
From what I knew about Kailyn, she preferred stabbing people in the back rather than confronting them head-on. So really, this fight was just beginning.
Angela took a deep breath and remained silent for a while before finally speaking. "Something doesn't add up. Why would Samantha suddenly return to the store just to slap Kailyn?"
I said, "Natalie."
"Natalie?" Angela looked at me suspiciously.
I added, "She's from Nifelheim City."
The first time I saw Natalie, I had the feeling I'd seen her somewhere before.
It took me a moment to remember. She was the girl who used to follow Samantha around, carrying her bag, pouring her drinks, and waiting on her hand and foot.
People change as they grow up, but the tiny mole at the corner of her eye made me recognize her instantly.
Even if she was no longer Samantha's little shadow, there was no way she would risk offending the Harvey family's eldest daughter for Kailyn.
If I could recognize her, then Samantha definitely could too.
There must have been a reason Natalie left Samantha's side back then.
I hadn't had the time to dig into it, but I saw an opportunity to stir up some trouble. After all, when two sides conflicted, one was bound to get hurt.
I could just sit back and watch, and maybe even benefit from the fallout.
Angela looked at me in disbelief. "So you're sure she won't stand up to Samantha for Kailyn? But aren't you afraid this will backfire on you? Those two are ruthless."
"Relax. To them, I'm nothing more than a pathetic mistress who isn't even worth acknowledging." I sighed. "Besides, they won't come at me openly. At most, they'll resort to underhanded tricks."
"Laurel, it's easy to dodge a spear in the open but hard to avoid a dagger in the dark." Angela pressed her lips together and looked at me. "And about Maliyah. If Samantha was behind what happened to her, she's not going to stop."
I said, "She won't dare to make a move on me now."
"What do you mean?" Angela narrowed her eyes slightly.
Not even five minutes later, she let out a curse.
"Who stood up for you?" Her expression shifted excitedly as she raised an eyebrow.
I shook my head. "I don't know."
Glancing at the order number on my phone, I slowly stood up. "I'm going to get my coffee."
No matter how rich one was, they still had to stand in line for coffee. And everyone faced death. It was just a matter of time.
I didn't tell Angela about my suspicions regarding Alex.
For some reason, I didn't want him to become the bloodthirsty villain in her mind. Or maybe I just didn't want to admit that I was afraid of him too.
"Laurel, I have to go. Something came up at work." Angela took the coffee from my hand and gently patted my shoulder. "I'll call you later."
I nodded, watching her leave before turning around and sitting across from the man in the farthest corner of the cafe, his face partially hidden under a baseball cap.
I stirred my coffee slowly, then lifted my gaze to meet his cold, piercing eyes. "Alright. What do you want from me?" I asked.
The man's hand trembled slightly as he lifted his cup. He took a deep breath before speaking. "Laurel, can I trust you completely?"
